Review
B&G Jeep Rentals is the leading Bequia jeep rental company. It is run by husband and wife team Gideon and Brontie Ollivierre, who keep a small fleet of Suzuki Jeeps, all 4x4 automatics with air-conditioning and power steering. Bequia is not a large island and so the company has just a handful of vehicles, eight of them, which are rented out mainly to people staying in the villas on the island, and to visitors wanting to explore the island’s beaches and sites of interest. B&G Jeep Rentals offers free pick up and delivery.

If Bequia is a small island, it is an extremely pretty one – and surprising in its variety – so it is definitely worth exploring. Hiring a car, for a couple of days at least, is the best way to get out to the beaches and sites by day and then to the restaurants in the evenings. Of course if you are staying in a villa or a private house, then a vehicle is almost essential. You will need to get your groceries and may well need a vehicle to get to the beach. A 4x4 can come in handy in Bequia because some roads are extremely steep and there are tracks to get to some of the remoter areas of the island. Finally, if you are hiring a car, Gideon can also help you get your local driving licence, see Delivery below.

The name B&G Jeep Rentals derives from Brontie and Gideon, who own and manage the company. They are from Bequia. Gideon has run the taxi business for many years, since the mid 1980s, but then, seeing an increase in the number of private homes on Bequia and the need for rental cars, they started the jeep rental business in 1998.

In addition to the jeep rental business, Gideon Ollivierre also runs a taxi service, Gideon Taxi (you can use the same email and phone number above), so on your arrival in Bequia he can collect you at the airport or ferry terminal and take you to your accommodation. He also takes island tours and so if you would like an orientation of the island he can show you around - though on an island the size of Bequia, everything melds into one pretty much, so you may find you get an impromptu island tour on the way to your accommodation anyway.

Fleet & Rates
The B&G fleet is eight Suzuki Escudo Jeeps of varying models. They are all automatic, have air-conditioning, power steering and 4-wheel drive.

Rates are around US$45 per day ($50 if you will be going off-road, for instance to Moonhole) or US$315 per week. Longer periods are negotiable and discounts are often available in the summer months.

All rates are subject to change without notice.

Delivery and Help with your local Licence
If Gideon has not already delivered your vehicle on arrival and helped you to your accommodation, then B&G offers free delivery and pick up of vehicles wherever you are staying on Bequia. If you are due to arrive late in the day, then you might want to arrange it for the morning after your arrival.

At the end of your stay, B&G would be happy to pick up your vehicle at your accommodation, or to collect it from you at the point of departure.

You will need a local licence before your drive on Bequia. If you arrive on island in time to get to the Revenue Office before closing time at 6pm, then Gideon will take you there en route to your accommodation. The Revenue Office is directly opposite the ferry terminal so if you arrive by ferry he can escort you across.

Practically speaking, because of inter-island connections within the Caribbean, you are quite likely to arrive after 6pm, or you may not feel like taking the time out for the formality on the way to your accommodation anyway. Gideon is happy to pick you up the next morning and take you down.

It is worth noting that if you are passing through ET Joshua Airport on the ‘mainland’ of St Vincent, then you may be able to fix your driving licence there while you are waiting for a connection.

Reservations
We recommend that you book any car in advance in Bequia, as there can be a shortage of cars in the island, particularly during the main winter season from 15 December until after Easter and over the summer, between early July and the middle of August. If there are no cars on island, B&G can arrange for a car to be brought from the mainland of St Vincent, but it is more expensive.

To make further enquiries or reservations for your Bequia car hire, please use the WEB, TELEPHONE OR DIRECT EMAIL ENQUIRIES link at the top of this review.

Getting to Bequia
Getting to Bequia can be a little complicated. There are no direct flights from outside the Caribbean and so you will have to make a connection somewhere in the region. One option is to fly via Puerto Rico, from where there are services to St Vincent (you can then take the ferry across to Bequia) or Canouan, from where you must take an inter-island flight, but altogether it may be easier to fly in to Barbados, from where you can either fly into St Vincent and take the ferry or take a ‘share charter’ connection straight into Bequia (more expensive). For ‘share charters’ and air taxi services, see
SVG Air.
