Spice Isle Villas is a small specialist Grenada villa rental agency. It is run by husband and wife team Nick and Pat Hughes and has the broadest selection of villas available through any company on the island, both in terms of the size and price of the houses, which vary from simple two-bedroom cottages set on the waterfront to luxury five-bedroom holiday homes, and also in their various locations in Grenada. Most of the villas are in the Southwest of the island, but houses are beginning to appear elsewhere too - in the Northeast for instance - and there are some in Grenada’s sister island Carriacou. Spice Isle Villas is a solid, reliable company that offers holidays in the best homes in Grenada, backing them up with personal email attention before you arrive and hands-on service when you reach the island.

Pat and Nick Hughes have been living in Grenada since 1996. They came for a change in life and to build a couple of houses for themselves, one of which they could rent out. This worked successfully for five years, but then things began to develop around them and a villa rental agency was born. Seeing their two-bedroom villa Môr-Gân hiring itself out successfully, other owners began to ask them to take on their properties. Spice Isle Villas now represents over 20 properties across Grenada and Carriacou and rents them out to clients from all over the world.
Read the full story of how Nick and Pat Hughes came to Grenada.
Like much of the tourism industry, the rental villas in Grenada are mainly in the south-western corner of the island, on the Point Salines Peninsular, in Grande Anse and in L’anse aux Epines. Over the years holiday homes have been built in the many finger coves along the island’s serrated southern shoreline, so Spice Isle also has villas for rent in Fort Jeudy, Westerhall, Petit Calivigny and Calivigny Gardens. And in recent years villas have also begun to appear elsewhere on the island too. Spice Isle has recently taken on a property in the North-east of Grenada, on Levera Beach, the most famous nesting spot in Grenada for endangered turtles. They also have a villa for rent on Carriacou in the Grenadines, a small island with a completely different atmosphere than its larger sister, which is a few minutes flying time north of Grenada. Finally, Spice Isle has some options for villa sail, in which you splice time spent on a yacht with time spent in your villa.
Spice Isle has a good mix of Grenada villas on offer. Some were purpose built as second homes and as holiday villas. Some are classically Caribbean in style, some more Mediterranean, but as outsiders have come into the island to build, so other houses have taken inspiration from elsewhere in the tropical world. Interestingly there has also been a flourish of exotic styles recently, with a couple of examples of Mexican and Moorish villas in recent years.
Spice Isle Villas is a relatively young business. It was set up in early 2003 with just two villas. Since then it has gathered pace enormously and now has more than 20 villas available for rent, the broadest selection of villas on the island. A handful are managed exclusively by them, but this is not the company’s core business. Importantly, though, because the Hughes are resident in Grenada, they have a good handle on what is going on with each of the villas and can make sure that everything is up to standard for you when you arrive. Spice Isle Villas is a small team, just Nick and Pat, and they call in drivers and others as needed. The business is led by their internet site (they do not produce a paper brochure) and most communication is done by email. You can expect a rapid response when you get in touch. This will develop into a discussion in which Nick will ensure that you get the right villa for your needs, give advice about reaching the island and generally advise on useful things to know before you arrive.
Nick Hughes has very much a hands-on approach. He will arrange for you to be met at the airport and taken to your villa, where he will visit you and help you to settle in. He will also arrange an initial provisioning of food, to cover food for your first evening (you will very likely arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, so the supermarkets may well be closed and anyway you may not feel like going out after the journey) and for breakfast on your first morning. And of course Nick is happy to offer advice about how to get the best out of the island, making restaurant recommendations and giving advice about island tours, yacht day-trips or deep sea fishing. |

Services Spice Isle Villas is a villa rental agency which rents out over 20 villas on both Grenada and Carriacou. Most of these are not on an exclusive arrangement (though several are not on the books of any other rental company on the island)
Spice Isle has two villas of their own which they manage and rent out and they do oversee a handful of villas on behalf of owners, for whom they hold the keys and arrange for maintenance, but villa management is not their core business. However, being resident on island means that Spice Isle usually knows what is going on and they do often become involved with the management and maintenance of the rental houses (partially so that everything is as it should be before any of their arrivals).
Grocery Supplies
Spice Isle will arrange for initial grocery supplies to be left in the villa for your arrival. This will include food and drink to cover your first evening and the first morning. Most guests (from both the US and Europe) arrive late in the afternoon and into evening, when the supermarkets are often closed, and when you may not feel like going out anyway after a day’s travelling. Each villa is different (some have chefs), but an evening meal can be prepared for your arrival if you would like one.
Spice Isle does not recommend a standard pack and instead will ask you, via email, what you would like to be purchased for you. This allows you to cater for children etc. Payment for initial grocery supplies should be made on departure at the end of your stay in Grenada |

Staff Villa staffing in Grenada is generally quite low key, in keeping with the wishes of most visitors, who generally do not want the presence of staff as you might find in, say, Barbados. A couple of the villas Spice Isle’s books have resident staff who offer day-long service, but in most cases the housekeeper will do her work and then go home, leaving you the run of the place undisturbed. All villas have a permanent or part-time gardener who will usually also stand in as general handyman.
The housekeeper will generally come three days a week between 8am and 2/3pm. They will make the beds and generally tidy the house and wash up. They will generally do personal laundry too. Most villas have a pool cleaning service once or twice a week. Just a couple of the villas have a permanent chef. There are some local cooks who can be brought in if you would like that, or do not want to cook for yourself all the time. If you wish to cater for larger groups then it is possible to make an arrangement with one of the better restaurants on the island.
Babysitting can be arranged (generally at US$5 per hour). High chairs and cribs are available too. |

Meet & Greet Nick Hughes will arrange for a driver to meet you at the airport on your arrival and take you to your villa. This is included in the price of the stay. Hughes himself will then meet you there, orientate you to the villa and answer any questions you have about it and the island. If you are not making your way back to the airport in your hire car at the end of the stay, Nick Hughes can arrange for your transfer back to the airport free of charge.
If you have booked your trip through a travel organiser, their local representative will probably be there to meet you. |

Check In/Check Out Most guests coming in Grenada tend to arrive on island in the mid to late afternoon, or in the evening and so there is not usually a clash between arriving and departing guests, which means that Spice Isle Villas is usually able to be flexible when it comes to your checking out of your villa. In cases where another rental is back to back with yours then you may be asked to vacate by noon (the general standard across the Caribbean) to give time for the villa to be cleaned and the sheets changed. Keep Spice Isle Villas informed of your travel times. |

Departures If you have a hire car, you can return it at the airport (make sure the luggage will fit) or have it collected from the villa prior to your departure. If you are not dropping your hire car back at the airport, Nick Hughes is also happy to arrange a transfer to the airport free of charge.
Again, if you have booked your trip through a travel organiser, their local representative should come to return you to the airport. Please check at the time of booking. |

Weddings A villa wedding is an excellent option and offers you the sort of privacy and 'made to order' experience that you would not be able to achieve at a hotel. You may choose to have the ceremony at your villa, but if you wish to marry in a church or at another location, the reception can certainly be held there afterwards. If you like this idea, Spice Isle Villas will happily liaise with a professional local wedding organiser, such as Caribbean Horizons, to ensure that everything goes smoothly on your wedding day.
A number of the properties make excellent venues for villa weddings and give stunning backdrops for photographs. If you do wish to plan your wedding in a villa you should check with Spice Isle on reservation because only certain villas permit large events on their grounds. |
