Bequia Beachfront Villas are a small collection of apartments on Bequia in the Grenadines, tucked away at the western end of Friendship Bay on the island’s southern shore. There are four of them in all, with between one and four bedrooms, and they sit right on the sand, in a modern building with traditional touches including gingerbread trim, pitched ceilings (on upper floors) and balconies with a lovely view over the bay. They are very comfortable, with large bedrooms, a proper living room in each case and fully equipped kitchens. And they are each decorated in individual style – some with muted colours, others funky and bright – full of personal touches, which give them a friendly, very liveable feel. Bequia Beachfront Villas offer a self-contained getaway on one of the Caribbean’s loveliest small islands.

Review There has always been a tradition of staying independently in Bequia, which despite its small size has plenty of places to visit and things to do. And this is exactly what Bequia Beachfront Villas offer, the opportunity to live in a very comfortable self-contained apartment with real character, at the end of a lovely beach in a quiet part of this extremely pretty island. The apartments or villa suites enable you to get the best of one of the most charming small islands in the Caribbean while living in secluded comfort.
The villas stand side by side at the western end of the curve of Friendship Bay, in a modern building that has been embellished with pretty Caribbean touches - blue trim on the white walls and red tin roofs fringed with gingerbread fretwork. They each have a covered balcony with steps leading right down onto the sand and a fantastic view out onto the bay. The balconies are big enough to have a dining table with chairs as well as loungers. You will no doubt spend quite a bit of your time out there.
But it is inside the apartments that you feel the full effect of Bequia Beachfront Villas, one of whose apartments was featured in an architectural magazine for its original style. Where hotel rooms are so often uniform in their layout and particularly in their decoration, here you will find a variety of rooms and a distinctive character. They quickly feel like a home.
In terms of the practical details, each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV and WiFi. The rooms, sitting rooms and bedrooms, are large and all bedrooms have en suite bathrooms. Upstairs rooms have tall pitched ceilings which make them airy and pleasant. Each villa suite is independent, set on its own floor, and between them they can sleep from two up to twelve people.
There are two one-bedrooms apartments, including the Tree House, which is set slightly higher up the hill and then there is a two-bedroom apartment set upstairs. The large apartment can be taken as either a three or a four bedroom apartment. From the balcony you walk straight into the huge living room and kitchen, from which the bedrooms lead off on two sides.
This is the apartment that was featured in Architectural Design magazine as an example of ‘Gracious Living’. It is decorated with bright colours and scattered with bright material in the cushions and upholstery. It has a strong theme of Indian decoration in places, in ornaments, embroideries and in the prints on the walls, but then among them there are also bold prints from theatrical productions from the States too.
It is these themes that give the apartments their strong, individual character, making you feel more at home than would ever be the case in a hotel room. There are further touches too, in the shells and the embroidery, octopus mirrors on the walls and the metal candle holders. Finally, you can also tell the sort of people that suit the apartments best by the number of books that there are. Each apartment has a small library of titles with which you can while away hours on the balcony.
Much of your daily life will probably take place outside, either on the balcony or on the beach itself just below. The apartments are at the very western end of the beach, which stretches off in a curve for over a mile and is a lovely stretch to walk. The bay is not that developed, but you can get a drink or a meal right at the other end of the beach. At the villas themselves you will find Daphne, the caretaker and head housekeeper, in attendance during the day (she leaves early evening). She can help if you have any questions or need advice about Bequia.
This south side of Bequia is quite quiet, certainly by comparison with Admiralty Bay over the hill (which is where you arrive if you come on the ferry from St Vincent), though even that can be pretty quiet at times. And that has its advantages of course. As well as your self-containment you can expect a good deal of peace and tranquillity. Bequia Beachfront Villas allow you to get the best of that side of Bequia too. |

Beach & Swimming Friendship Bay, which starts right outside the door, heads for more than a mile in a gentle, generally palm-backed curve. It makes a lovely walk. The sea outside the villas is protected and generally calm - fishing boats anchor offshore in this section of the bay - and so the swimming is excellent.
Other favourite beaches are over the hill to the north. Lower Bay has a lovely strip of sand and a couple of simple beach bars and next door to it, the steep-sided Princess Margaret Beach is quite secluded and extremely pretty. It also has a beach bar, Jack’s, which has a bit more contemporary style. There are other beaches in the east of the island, including Industry Bay, which is almost always quiet. |

Sports & Recreation Snorkelling gear can be rented from the scuba dive shops on the island, who will also take you out on a snorkel trip if you want. If you would prefer to go scuba diving then of course they are happy to arrange that too.
Despite the size of the island, there are quite a few informal trails that are ideal for hiking in Bequia. They will take you up into the hills in the east of the island.
Massage can be arranged in your apartment. Speak to Daphne. |

Locality Bequia Beachfront Villas is on the south side of the island in a fairly local area called La Pompe, in the general vicinity of Friendship Bay. At the other end of the beach is the Friendship Bay hotel with its beach bar, Moskito, but besides this there is not very much on offer in the bay.
Port Elizabeth is the island’s main (only) town. Set behind the waterfront road you will find shops and cafes including an excellent bookshop, the Bequia Bookshop, which offers Caribbean books and maps, the ferry point, the tourism office and the market. You will also see miniature yachts on sale. These are something of a tradition in Bequia. There are plenty of cafes and bars along the front and on a point in the far side of the bay is the Devil’s Table, a restaurant on a pirate theme.
The Belmont waterfront, which leads west out of the town centre, is one of the prettiest places in the Caribbean. It is a line of bars and restaurants set under the shorefront fringe of coconut palms. It is fun to walk up and down anyway, but the various bars can also get very lively, particularly when there are plenty of yachts in the bay. Mac’s is a popular pizzeria. Beyond the town, in Princess Margaret Bay, Jack’s has an excellent modern feel. And in Lower Bay is a very nice West Indian restaurant called Nando’s, which makes a lovely evening out. There are many simpler restaurants around the island.
There are a number of day sails – from the north of St Vincent down to the Tobago Cays to the other Grenadine islands – from the north of St Vincent down to the Tobago Cays. Some in traditional ships, to other islands up and down the island chain. |

Airport Meet & Greet If you let them know, Bequia Beachfront Villas will arrange for a driver to be at the airport or the ferry terminal on your arrival and take you to the villas. The fare is US$10 per head from the ferry. |

Getting to and around Bequia Getting to Bequia can be a little complicated. There are no direct flights from outside the Caribbean and so you will have to make a connection somewhere. One option is to fly via Puerto Rico, from where there are services to St Vincent (you can then take the ferry across to Bequia), but it may be easier to fly in to Barbados, from where you can either fly into St Vincent or take a ‘share charter’ connection. For ‘share charters’ and air taxi services, see SVG Air.
It is useful to have a car in Bequia, for a couple of days at least, because it gives you the independence to explore the island, including the relatively remote beaches and bars by day and the restaurants in the evenings. On Bequia we recommend B & G Jeep Rentals, who will deliver a Jeep and help you get your local driving licence. |
