Double bedroom at Bussbury Court, Polo Ridge

Style: The two storey main house and separate cottage are both contemporary builds with a mix of the Mediterranean – covered patios, arches, terracotta tile floors - and traditional Barbadian touches - tray ceilings, coral stone walls and finishes - with plantation-style furniture (much of it antique). One of a few luxury Barbados villas near the polo with a refined and peaceful air that suits mature couples or a small group of friends
The Beach: Approximately five minutes drive to Sandy Lane to the north or Fitts Village to the south
The Rooms: 4 bedrooms en suite - 3 bedrooms in main house (2 downstairs either side of the courtyard and a 2nd master bedroom upstairs), all with showers. Separate 1-bedroom (master) guest cottage with sitting area and own patio, marble bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower
Key features: One of a few luxury Barbados villas located at Holders, home of Barbados Polo and the Holders Festival. Exceptionally well presented, compact villa with pretty gardens. Main house set around a paved courtyard with breakfast table and a heated jet stream Jacuzzi plunge pool. Elegant Great Room with sitting area and formal dining table of coral stone (seats 8), covered patio on tennis court side with a well equipped kitchen (concealed behind a screen). Swimming pool with sun terrace and wet bar with alfresco dining area and barbecue. Floodlit tennis court, cable TV.
Children: Not suitable for young children due to location of bedrooms and courtyard with unfenced plunge pool
Staff: Cook, maid and laundress. Night watchman extra (security system is installed)

Beach & Swimming
There are some excellent swimming beaches within a fifteen minute drive, set on the west coast between Fitts Village and Sandy Lane and north towards Colony Club. A public footpath to the south of the hotel gives access to Sandy Lane beach. There is parking along the side of the main road.

Buttsbury Court’s large pool sits in a very pleasant and spacious sun terrace of coral stone render located between the main house, the tennis court and the guest cottage. It has a classic style, with steps along the shallow end and a pergola that provides partial shade and an alfresco dining area. In the inner courtyard of the main house there is also a sunken jet stream Jacuzzi plunge-pool. Two of the bedrooms are located on the courtyard, so the villa is not really suitable for small children.

Sports & Recreation
Buttsbury Court has its own floodlit astroturf tennis court located next to the Great Room living area. A covered veranda off the living room enables spectators to see the court from inside. The house sits off the north-west corner of Holders, one of the four Barbados polo fields, where international matches and local matches are held during the winter season. The club house is just a couple of minutes walk away. (You used to be able to watch the matches from the house, but the gardens have now grown up and obscured the field).

The Sandy Lane Golf Club, tennis courts, and dedicated spa are located within five minutes drive of Buttsbury Court, along with a range of water sports at Sandy Lane Hotel’s beach. There is a fitness studio at West Coast Mall approximately ten minutes away.

Locality
Buttsbury Court is located on Polo Ridge, just up the hill from Tamarind Cove Hotel and Daphne’s and Scarlet restaurants, on a ridge overlooking the Paynes Bay area. It sits at the corner of Holder’s polo field, not far from Holders House, home of the Holders Season. Ten minutes drive to the north you will come to the heart of St James, and the nearest shopping district, Holetown. Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village (a series of traditional-looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs), the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in-store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening. Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.

There is a host of restaurants within 15 minutes drive in either direction of Buttsbury Court. The celeb favourite, the Lone Star, is about 15 minutes north and the famous Cliff Restaurant is about 10 minutes away to the south. Also look out for Scarlet and Daphne’s, both at the bottom of the hill. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides, but you will also find pizza parlours, cafés, beach bars, fast food outlets and an excellent patisserie, Flindt. There is also good nightlife in Holetown, with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s.

Useful Hints
Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival. The cook will then prepare a welcome meal. Thereafter, staff will shop for you during your stay if you wish to delegate this chore, though a 10% service charge plus VAT will be added to all shopping bills. Rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’, about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.

During the polo season, when local and international polo matches take place, the loudspeaker commentary from the club house (often very amusing) is audible from the villa. The club house is far enough away not to cause too much disturbance and matches are normally played late afternoons and over by sunset.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers are paid for locally and take approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by
St James Travel & Tours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Although everything is relatively close at hand, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays. It will be especially useful if you want to dine out at night or go sightseeing. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
