Description Calliaqua is one of a number of villas that occupy a ridge overlooking the West Coast of Barbados in the Sugar Hill Resort Community, which includes the David Lloyd Tennis Centre and Village. Set within an acre of landscaped gardens, which give a great feeling of space, Calliaqua is an ideal setting for those who prefer to be in a resort with a residential feel.
Designed so that guests get the best of the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, Calliaqua has spacious covered verandas on both floors running the full front of the villa. The interior décor of the villa’s main living areas has a contemporary colonial theme and the furnishings, fabrics and accessories use images of palms and coconut palms to create a sense of the tropics. The actual fabric of the villa features cool, cream Italian marble floor tiles, coral stone clad walls, French doors topped with traditional arched fanlights and high ceilings. The upper bedrooms have tray ceilings in traditional Caribbean style.
At the lower level, the foyer leads into a formal sitting room, where a small dining area, suitable for breakfast, is located at the rear and the kitchen behind it right at the back. Two sets of French doors lead out onto the covered terrace, which has comfortable wicker seating on one side and a more formal dining area on the other with a coral stone table, elegant padded chairs and a crystal chandelier. There are hanging cotton drapes for the afternoon when the sun proves too much, but it is certainly a shame to shut out the views to the pool below and the dazzling Caribbean Sea beyond.
There are three bedrooms within the main villa and a downstairs study, located off the sitting room, which is able to convert into a fourth. This room leads out to the living veranda, where there is a double sofa bed, cable TV & DVD, internet access, and like all of the living areas (including the verandas) a ceiling fan. This fourth bedroom has an en suite bathroom with shower which also works as a day bathroom. Upstairs all the bedrooms have access to the full length veranda, which has been well furnished with woven natural fibre chairs and a small denim covered breakfast table that seats four. The views from upstairs are exceptionally good. The three bedrooms comprise a central twin room with patchwork quilts and an en suite bathroom with shower, a second similar sized bedroom with king size bed with a white theme, and then the larger Master bedroom with brass four poster frame king size bed, which continues the contemporary colonial theme from downstairs. The Master has a dressing room and en suite marble bathroom with tub and separate shower. A pool-side cottage forms the fifth bedroom and it has a small covered terrace that sits at the edge of the tiled pool and sun terrace. The cottage has a kitchenette area with larder fridge, king size bed with a bold tropical spread, and en suite bathroom with shower. All bedrooms are air-conditioned.
A tiled pool area is located just below the main villa and is accessed from the covered veranda via a flight of stairs at the centre. A large freeform, mosaic tiled pool, set with rock features and waterfalls to create a lagoon-like setting, measures 1000sq. Guests can choose to dine poolside, where the villa’s sound system is also operational. With a wet bar in the nearby gazebo, cocktails and rum punches at sunset will be close at hand. |

Beach & Swimming The nearest beach with easy public access is literally just down the hill next to Colony Club, which is about 5 minutes by car. Guests can choose to travel up the coast to St Peter, and use the members area at the Suga-Suga Beach Club & Spa, which is about 10 minutes by car. At the club guests benefit from discounted watersports, such as waterskiing, hobie cat sailing, kayaking and boat trips, plus sun beds are available and use of a private beach deck. There is also a popular bar and restaurant.
The communal infinity edge swimming pool up at Sugar Hill’s clubhouse measures 2000 sq ft and the villa has a private pool of generous proportions. Calliaqua’s free form. mosaic tiled pool has a number of rock features set around its edges which either have a waterfall feature or provide an area of planting to create a lagoon like setting. The pool is approximately (49ft long) 1000sq ft and has depths of 3ft to 6ft with one small set of entry steps. |

Locality Calliaqua is set within the fifty acre Sugar Hill Resort Community, located on a ridge over looking the West Coast, with facilities including the David Lloyd Tennis Centre with 4 floodlit courts, a clubhouse featuring a communal pool, the popular Sassafras restaurant and an air-conditioned gym. The nearest shopping district in Holetown (about 6 minutes south by car). Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening.
Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with police station, post office, parish church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.
There is a host of restaurants within 15 minutes drive along the main West Coast Road in either direction from Sugar Hill. You might consider the famous Cliff Restaurant, about ten minutes away to the south - also look out for Scarlet, Daphne’s and Calabaza in this direction. Heading north beyond Holetown you could try celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 15 minutes north, or the Fish Pot. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s. |
