Coyaba is one of just a few hotels that are actually on Grand Anse Beach. It sits on nearly 200 yards of the spectacular sand right at the heart of the island’s busiest and best beach area. Coyaba takes its name from an Amerindian word for heaven and if top sand and sea is what you are looking for then this might just be the place for you. It is very much a resort hotel, with plenty of activities, sports and entertainment, but by resort standards it is not that large and anyway it has its own strong and friendly character.
As you enter the lobby you will see that the new Coyaba has a very different feel than it had before. The design is lean and contemporary, with white walls, clean lines, dark wood and slender pillars. The style is quite ‘minimal’ and there are contemporary paintings on the walls. In the lobby you will find the reception desk, a small library, an internet room, two duty-free shops, Y&R Car Rentals and a tour operator desk.
The Amerindian theme is continued around the resort and so you will see quite a bit of Arawak-inspired design built into the decoration. Patterns are laid into the floor and the lobby is decorated with urns and small statues of zemies, or Arawak gods. The predominant colours are light and dark browns and gold, and in the rooms there is deep red as well.
As you walk into the central gardens, you step up to the evening bar, which is open-sided, its roof supported by narrow round pillars. From here you look out over the main heart of the hotel, including the pool and the a la carte restaurant, the Carbet. This overlooks the pool from a deck with a criss-cross balustrade and a double pitched shingle roof. It looks excellent when lit up at night. Next to it is the swim-up bar in the pool.
Beyond that, closer to the beach and past the kitchens, you come to the second restaurant, the Arawakabana, which offers fine dining in the evenings only. It has a view through the lit gardens down to the beach. Again, in keeping with the minimal feel of the resort, the Arawakabana is open-sided and has low, clean white walls and a series of pickled pine roofs supported by slender columns. A gazebo nearby is given over to entertainment in the evenings.
The resort’s 80 air-conditioned rooms are arranged in eight low-standing blocks, which are also white in colour inside and out. The rooms themselves are white with dark wood, deep red furnishings, paddle ceiling fans and contemporary paintings on the walls. They each have some outside space in a balcony or terrace.
The atmosphere at Coyaba is upbeat and there is plenty of activity by day and entertainment in the evenings. As well as couples, the hotel also sees quite a few families. Clearly it has a resort feel, but it is quite small and personable as resorts go, and there is a strong family atmosphere too.
Coyaba was opened in 1987 by the Cherman family. They started off with just 30 rooms, but over the years they have increased the number to 80. |

Beach & Swimming Grand Anse is Grenada’s finest beach - in the traditional Caribbean sense of miles of mounded white sand giving into an aquamarine sea. It is ideal for walking early in the morning (the nicest time of the Caribbean day) and during the day you can find sports, a few bars and a craft market on the sand. The views are pretty too, across to St George’s and the island beyond, which rises in huge green mountains against the tropical sky.
The beach at Coyaba has deck chairs and parasols that provide some shade. There are also barbecues, often with music and dancing, which the islanders join in.
The hotel swimming pool is at the heart of the resort, overlooked by the bar and the Carbet Restaurant. It has the only swim up bar in Grenada. |

Sports & Recreation There are plenty of sports on offer at Coyaba. On the beach there are complimentary non-motorised sports for each guest for an hour each day. This includes snorkelling, Hobie Cat and Sunfish sailing as well as kayaking. There is also a dive operator based at the Coyaba (Ecodive and Trek) and the hotel offers dive packages (please apply to the hotel for further details).
On land there is volleyball, table tennis, shuffleboard, a fitness room (open 11am-5pm, over 16's only) a tennis court (racquets and balls provided) and a children’s playground. Near the entrance to the hotel is the spa facility with two treatment rooms and a shower room. A variety of massages, manicures, pedicures, waxing and reflexology is available by appointment from one of three therapists. |

Staff There is a daily maid service to the rooms and room service if you want it. The staff at Coyaba are friendly and efficient. The fact that the hotel is family owned and run has its effect and you will be looked after well. |

The Rooms The 80 bedrooms are set in eight two-storey blocks that are staggered around the resort. They have white walls and are furnished in a variation of the minimal style that runs through the resort, with deep red added into the colour scheme. Each room has a patio or balcony and is air-conditioned. Other facilities include cable television, fridge and coffee-maker and the bathrooms include bathtubs and showers. There is a nightly turn-down service. Four of the rooms are handicapped accessible. Most have double beds or twins, but around 30 have king size beds. |

Dining Coyaba has two restaurants, both of which take their names from the Amerindian inspiration of the resort. The Carbet (named after thatched Arawak longhouse) is at the heart of the resort next to the pool, and the second, their fine dining restaurant, the Arawakabana (it takes its name from the local American Indians themselves, the Arawaks), looks out onto the beach. They are both stylishly presented and open-sided, their wooden shingle roofs supported on slender columns, in keeping with the minimal theme of the resort.
The pool-side Carbet is open for lunch and dinner. The menu is a la carte and it serves international fare with hints of the Caribbean. The Arawakabana is Coyaba’s fine dining restaurant and serves international cuisine. It is semi-formal and open for breakfast and dinner.
Room service is available if you want it. |

Locality Coyaba is at the heart of Grand Anse Beach, which itself is the liveliest on the island. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops in the immediate area.
Beyond Grand Anse it is a fifteen minute ride by car or bus to St George’s, Grenada’s extremely pretty capital town, where there are waterfront cafes and a lively local market as well as other shops. You can catch a bus at the end of the road. Or you can turn south and head to one of the many coves along the southern coastline and on the Point Salines peninsular. In them you will find some of the Caribbean’s finest beach bars. Try the Aquarium, the Beach House and La Sagesse (out east). |
| ^ back to top |
Meet & Greet Coyaba does not offer airport transfers, however taxis are readily available. The trip costs around US$13 per trip and take 15 minutes. If you would feel more comfortable using the concierge services of a local organiser, which will include meeting you at the airport, arranging airport transfers as well as island activities, we recommend Caribbean Horizons.
If you are travelling with a tour operator, the company’s representative should be at the airport to meet you but please check at the time of booking. |

Getting Around A car can make an excellent addition to a trip to the Caribbean. You can explore the island and go out to dinner in the evenings and in Grenada particularly you can head off to one of the many excellent beach bars by day. We recommend Y&R Car Rentals, who have a desk in the foyer at Coyaba. Please note though, that it is advisable to book in advance if you want a car for a week or more, because pre-booked rates are often better, and particularly during the winter season when there is often a shortage of cars. You might want your vehicle to be delivered to the property the morning after your arrival. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
Taxis are available through Reception, although you are advised to book in advance. Local buses do come down into Grand Anse, but infrequently, so you will probably have to walk to the main drag. From there the service to St George’s is frequent and fast. |
