Galleon Beach is something of a rarity nowadays as one of the few Caribbean resorts that has remained relatively unchanged over the years. It has been a home away from home for two whole generations of travellers now, offering the same trusty and comfortable escape since its inception in the 1960s. Of course it has been gradually upgrading since then, when it started as a small timeshare resort and nowadays, as well as the core accommodation of cottages there are a number of private villas, but the atmosphere and the philosophy of Galleon Beach is still fundamentally the same. It is a friendly, very low key retreat, with comfortable accommodation and plenty of activities, all within one of Antigua’s liveliest and most prestigious areas, English Harbour.
STOP PRESS - Please note that Galleon Beach was sold in early 2006. Redevelopment was scheduled to commence after 31 May 2007 and the 'resort cottages' were closed. A start date for construction work during 2007 was never issued and the private villas remained open for business with Galleon Beach still taking reservations. The proposed development has not made any further progress and the ‘resort and cottages’ re-opened for the 2007/08 and 2008/09 winter seasons, with business as usual. The resort will close again during summer 2009 for annual maintenance. Updated 18 May 2009

Galleon Beach is like a trusty family friend. Over the years it has been a popular getaway with two and now a third generation of travellers looking for a place to relax and enjoy a beautiful natural, beachfront location, at an affordable price. Its success revolves around its guests who come to know the place and return year after year. It started with a core of timeshare members in the 1960. Over the years they have introduced their family and then their friends, who have all forged close friendships with the long serving staff, and then other guests who also return again and again.
The small resort is on the eastern side of English Harbour, laid out in leisurely land that slopes gradually away from the beach, becoming steadily steeper until it turns into cliffs. It is on the opposite shore from the activity of Nelson’s Dockyard so it is within a shout of all the action, but it is also quiet and slightly secluded, enabling you to escape when you want to.
The beauty of Galleon Beach is that the ingredients of the best Caribbean holiday are all right there – a lovely beach, wonderful swimming, spacious landscaped gardens full of tropical flowers and a variety of fruit trees, tennis and watersports if you want them, a low key restaurant with the odd night of live music, comfortable accommodation where you can be yourself and in season all the activities and action of English Harbour within easy reach. In the spirit of a happy family, one can forgive the odd imperfection – it’s part of the charm – but the simplicity just seems to work. To hear the sound of a wire clinking on a mast in the distance and not much else is a real pleasure. Or to walk in the shallows, where a flounder has just whizzed past your feet, or drop your favourite grilled fare on a coal pot. The simple things in life, rather than glitz and glamour, this is what Galleon Beach is all about.
The manager of Galleon Beach is Jerry Roberts, who took over in early 2006, after the hotel was sold. The hotel is eventually due for refurbishment, but no dramatic changes were due to take place until the summer season in 2007, after the Super Eight stage of the ICC World Cup Cricket (27 March – 8 April) and then the usual Antigua Sailing Week, which takes place at the end of April. Plans for the redevelopment of the hotel have not yet been revealed. |

Beach & Swimming Galleon Beach is set on a quarter mile curve of glorious white sand with beautiful, calm waters and excellent swimming. A coral reef approximately 75ft off shore offers good snorkelling. |

Sports & Recreation There are two tennis courts (rubberised asphalt) for daytime play, with rackets and balls available from reception. Non-motorised watersports are complimentary to all guests and include single & double kayaks, sunfish sail boats and snorkelling gear. |

Staff Cottages and villas are provided with a daily hotel-style maid service. Baby-sitters are available on request for an additional charge and a local cook can be provided for US$40 a day to cook two meals at the private villas.
Many of the staff have worked at Galleon Beach for over twenty years and have made lifelong friends with members and guests. They are essential to the fabric of the resort. Roma Roberts, Head of Housekeeping, has been at the resort since 1969. The manager is Jerry Roberts, who has been with the resort since the early 1990s. He took over as manager when the resort was sold in early 2006. Amongst the longest serving staff members at Galleon Beach are Cecil “Bravo” Williams, who has been Head of Maintenance since 1978 and is an absolute authority on world cricket, Jean Brathwaite, who is renowned for her computer-like memory – she has been running reservations since the early 1980s, and Andre Rhodes, head of guest services. Andre is a bit of a Mr Fix-it as well as the telephone, computer and communications expert. He started out in the early 1990s driving the ferry boat. |

Accommodation THE COTTAGES - The cottages are located either directly on the beach or scattered on the gently sloping lawns. There are twenty-six of them in all and they are two main designs. All have been simply furnished in a light Caribbean style, with exposed white painted roofs, cooling terracotta tiles, white painted wicker furniture and pretty floral printed fabrics in pastel shades. The result is a bright, light and airy, cheerful ambiance. The bungalow-like beach cottages - eleven bedrooms in all - consist of two semi-detached cottages, each with a pair of one bedroom units with inter-connecting doors (also referred to as duplexes), five individual one bedroom cottages and two individual two bedroom cottages. All the cottages have tiled patios giving straight onto the sand.
In the gardens, which slope steadily up behind the waterfront, there are fifteen one and two bedroom units, with two one bedroom cottages, two pairs of one bedroom duplexes, three sets of two bedroom cottages and six charming two bedroom wooden round houses or rondavelles. These have polished wood floors and a wood decked balcony. All garden units have patios with views of the gardens and bay. A daily, hotel style maid service is provided, with baby sitters available on request. A personal laundry service is provided via the resort for an additional charge.
THE VILLAS - There are currently seven private villas for rent out of a total of eighteen within the resort. They all have a contemporary Caribbean style with wide verandas and traditional white painted criss-cross balustrades. The villas are all located to the rear of the garden cottages on the higher ground, beneath the rocky ridge on top of which Shirley Heights is located. On Sunday afternoons the strains of the calypso and steel pan music drift down during the famous party. All the villas have views of English Harbour below and most can see Nelson’s Dockyard beyond.
Each villa is individually furnished, according to its owner’s taste, but within a tropical style that suits the environs. They all have spacious verandas, cable TV, private swimming pools and they all benefit from full use of the resort’s facilities which include the tennis courts, watersports and ferry service. The beach is a short stroll down the hill from the villas and will take around 3 minutes. A daily hotel style maid service is provided. A cook can be arranged at a cost of US$40 per day, for which she will prepare two meals a day. It is best to request this service at the time of booking. Groceries are not included. Babysitters are available on request. A personal laundry service is provided via the resort for an additional charge. |

There is complimentary access to a high speed internet service which is available for diners in the lounge, which also has wireless services. Closed on Thursdays. |

The individual one bedroom cottages have a large tiled patio running the length of the unit, which is semi enclosed by a low wall. There is an area for sunbathing and a partially screened area for dining alfresco. Glass sliding doors lead to a small foyer, with the bedroom to one side with an en suite bathroom. Private Antigua Rental Villas with private pools at Galleon Beach:
Babylon, sleeps 8
The exterior of Babylon is similar to the other villas at Galleon Beach, being contemporary Caribbean in style, but once you are inside you will see immediately that the interior décor is a different story. Once owned by rock legend Eric Clapton, the villa has an artfully rustic, Bohemian air achieved by colour-washed walls in a dusty coral pink in the main living areas, and lime green in the bedrooms. The villa has one of the most elevated positions at Galleon Beach resort and it seems to hug the side of the hill. It has simply stunning views across Freeman’s Bay and on a clear day the island of Montserrat can be seen. The villa has two levels, with steps leading from the gardens below up the side of the property.
On the upper level is a large, comfortably furnished sitting room, with large white sofas, cable TV and VCR plus a CD system. It is dominated by a very large oil painting with a rather striking water scene, which some might find a little on the ‘dark’ side. The room has doors to which fling right open onto the extensive covered terrace which has a dining area to one side, and an area to sit and relax. A compact, well equipped kitchen is tucked into a corner off the living room.
From the sitting area on the covered veranda guests can step right into the Jacuzzi which spills down to the swimming pool below. A couple of steps below the veranda is a wonderful tiled sun terrace with a shady spot set into the back wall and a pergola with a delightful swing-chair. The swimming pool (22ft x 12ft with depths of 3½ft to 7ft) features painted turtles on the bottom and juts out over the gardens below. It also has the same glorious views as the main veranda.
There are four air-conditioned bedrooms at Babylon. Three are located upstairs, including the master bedroom giving onto the main veranda. It has a queen size bed and en suite bathroom with shower. The other two bedrooms are located off the living room, one with a queen bed and the other with a double four poster. They share a bathroom with shower. The fourth bedroom is on the lower level. It has twin beds and an en suite bathroom with shower.
Countess, sleeps 6
Located high in the rear corner of the resort, Countess is built into the steep hillside over two levels and has superb views across the bay. It has a contemporary Caribbean flavour and has been simply furnished with white wicker furnishings and floral fabrics, with cooling white tiled floors, exposed white painted ceiling and white walls. Its spacious living and dining room has French doors that lead out to a covered veranda running along the whole front of the villa. Here you will find an area for alfresco dining and an area to relax and enjoy the views to English Harbour. The veranda also extends around the side of the villa to the small pool area. The swimming pool itself (8ft x 18ft and 6ft deep) has been built into the hillside and is surrounded on two sides by a wooden sun deck on the other two by a colourful hand painted back splash. Tucked away in the corner of the villa and resort, the pool is very private, but it still has wonderful views to Freeman’s Bay and on a clear day Montserrat. The compact kitchen is located off the living area and also has access onto the veranda. Countess has three air-conditioned bedrooms that lead off the main living area. They all have twin beds and en suite bathrooms with showers only.
Lime Hill House, sleeps 8
Lime Hill House, a luxury property that exudes quality, has been tastefully and lovingly furnished by the English owners, Colin & Marlene Saunders. It was actually designed by architect Andrew Goodnough, who has been working in Antigua for many years and uses many features from traditional Caribbean building in his modern buildings. He has designed Lime Hill House for outside living, bringing the outdoors inside by way of huge open entrances to the living areas, with the west facing openings framing the stunning vistas of Freeman’s Bay. The look of the house is based on the traditional Caribbean great house, its upper level clad in hardwearing greenheart wood, which is also used for all the exterior wood fixtures including balconies, fencing and balustrades, and is all painted in brilliant white. The villa has been built right into the rock beneath the Ridge, the rear rim of the resort that culminates in a cliff, and it has a series of rockery style steps winding up the side of the villa beside the driveway to the main entrance. (Lime Hill House is not really suited to anyone with difficulty getting around and certainly not to small children.) A terrace at the rear of the house, laid with local stone, is cut into the cliff. Its rear wall is the rockface.
The elegantly furnished living area, also done in modernized great house style, has large sliding doors to both the rear stone terrace and the front of the villa, which creates a pleasant through breeze. With a lofty, pickle pine exposed ceiling, the room has been tastefully furnished with large, comfortable white-upholstered sofas imported from England and there are two wicker chaise longues placed on the terrace by the double sided stairway The terrace gives onto the pool below, which has a tiled sun terrace with uninterrupted views of the bay. Back inside, on one side of the sitting room is the formal dining area with a mahogany dining table and natural woven fibre seating for six guests. Beyond it an open doorway reveals a compact, very stylish and very well equipped kitchen. The villa has its own water filtration device which feeds straight into the fridge to provide chilled drinking water.
The most popular area of the villa has to be the tiled pool terrace with its wonderful, infinity edge swimming pool (24ft x 8ft and 5ft deep). The terrace is west facing and so it not only has the most spectacular views taking in the entire bay and English Harbour but it is also a true suntrap, and the pool a perfect place to cool off. There is also a second, more casual dining area on a covered terrace to the side of the pool, so that guests can not only enjoy dinner, but also lunch.
Lime Hill has three air-conditioned bedrooms, plus a sitting room that can convert into the fourth bedroom. Two of them are upstairs, located on wings either side of the living area. The master bedroom has a king size bed with white wicker headboard and is spacious, light and airy, with a balcony overlooking the bay. It has an en suite bathroom with small tub and an exotic outside stone shower. The second bedroom has a queen size bed, balcony and en suite shower. Two further bedrooms are located downstairs on either side of the pool terrace. One has a queen size bed and en suite shower, with doors leading out to a dining terrace with large gas barbecue. On the opposite side is a family TV room which serves as the fourth bedroom. It has two single settee beds that push together to form a double bed and it has use of the guest bathroom with shower which is located in the hallway. All bedrooms have hairdryers and sea views. It should be noted that there is no interior access to these bedrooms.
Sirius, sleeps 6
Sirius is a very comfortable, spacious, light and airy villa located towards the top of the resort, from where you can look up towards Shirley Heights while floating in the pool. The villa has been furnished in a typically tropical Caribbean style, with natural wicker seating, the occasional colourful print and it has a large open-plan living area with a series of doors leading out to the covered veranda. The living room has a comfortable sitting area with cable TV, a dining area in the middle of the room and a well equipped kitchen area which is completely open to the rest of the room. This has a large tiled cooking and preparation island with gas hob (there is also a wall mounted oven and microwave), and a large fridge/freezer that provides filtered chilled water.
There are three air-conditioned bedrooms which each have twin beds that can be pushed together to make kings. The master bedroom is located off the sitting area, and has a large en suite tiled bathroom with shower, and a walk-in closet. It also has French doors leading out to the veranda and pool terrace. On the opposite (kitchen) end of the living area are two more bedrooms, one with window facing the bay and the other which looks to the hillside to the rear and is slightly larger in size. Both have en suite bathrooms with tiled showers.
Out on the covered veranda, a large wooden dining table probably gets more use than the one inside, as the views are splendid. Guests can also choose to have lunch beside the swimming pool (18ft x 8ft and 6ft deep) which is located to the north side of the villa off the veranda. The pool is surrounded on all sides by a sun deck and has an extended area to the rear where there is additional space for sunbathing or enjoying lunch, in the shade of a sago palm. The pool area has partial views of the bay due to an abundance of flowering vines and tropical shrubbery. This has now grown up as high as the fencing, blocking the view if you are in the pool itself or relaxing on a chair.
The remaining villas for rent have not been inspected recently so are not included in this review. |

Locality Galleon Beach is set within the National Park at English Harbour and the historic Nelson’s Dockyard is just minutes away by water taxi and less than 10 minutes by car. English Harbour is a haven for yachtsmen, many of whom are in residence during the winter season and then who arrive in droves for the famous Antigua Sailing Week towards the end of April. The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta (April) and the Nicholson Charter Boat Show (December) also pull in the crowds. The English Harbour area has many bars and restaurants, a marina, gift shops, provisioning store, bakery, post office, ATM, bank, internet café, a craft market, museum and of course the historic docks. It should be noted however that while things are very lively in the winter season, during the middle of the summer everything is fairly quiet and a number of businesses take a couple of months holiday.
Just along the beach from Galleon Beach is the Inn at English Harbour, a hotel with a beach front bar that serves breakfast and light snacks. Apart from the commissary at Galleon Beach itself, where you can purchase the basics, the nearest grocery store/supermarket is Bailey’s on the Falmouth main road. This has all the essentials, including fresh local bread and cakes and some fresh produce (all meat, poultry etc is frozen), but the best supplies are at the Epicurean supermarket located 30 minutes away to the north of St Johns on Friar’s Hill Road in the Woods Shopping Mall. There you will find a wide selection of both local and imported food items and wine.
Where nightlife is concerned, apart from English Harbour and its various bars, the highlight of every week is the Sunday afternoon barbecue at Shirley Heights Lookout, where visitors and locals gather to party and watch the sunset with a drink or two and enjoy a live steel band concert, followed by a reggae band. |

Meet & Greet If you are travelling independently, taxis are readily available at the airport and the ride from the airport will take around 30-40 minutes. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport until your departure, a Transfer and Concierge Service is offered by St James Travel & Tours.
If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking. |

Getting Around Although most things are relatively close at hand, a hired car is strongly recommended for all villa holidays. Public transport is sporadic and not a convenient option and anyway does not come down to Galleon Beach itself (though you can always get a ferry over from the Dockyard).
A rental car will be useful if you want to dine out at night and explore the island and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. We recommend you book in advance via your travel organiser or direct with Thrifty Car Rentals, who will deliver to the property and issue your Antiguan driving licence, price US$20. Ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately 2-3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Antigua or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
Be aware that around Christmas and over the sailing festivals there can be a shortage of cars in Antigua, so you are advised to book well in advance. Also book early if you want one for a week or more because the pre-booked rates can be better. |
