Description Set back into the hills on the Cap Estate, an exclusive residential estate in the far north of St Lucia, La Mer has been designed to take advantage of its dramatic location, with views that extend to Anse du Cap Bay. The villa has an original, open-air concept – it is a charming and cosy tropical hideaway that lends itself to romantic retreats - but it is also a rare find in that there are very few private, one bedroom villas with pools in the Caribbean.
The main accommodation is located on the upper ground level, with the garden and a lovely covered living area on a lower level. The entrance leads into an unusual galleried landing, which is enclosed along the front by wooden loovres and sea green wrought iron work that allows a natural through-flow of air whilst providing privacy and security. This gallery houses the dining area, an open plan kitchen and a delightful sitting area. The walls are adorned with original works of art, and some of the furniture has an interesting sandstone effect – you will see this in the framed wall mirror, the scrolled pillars that support the glass table tops of the dining table, a console and a coffee table. Next to the dining area is a compact, well equipped kitchen with a breakfast hatch, and off the kitchen is a laundry area. The gallery extends to a cosy sitting area, with a built-in sofa against the window and features a small TV with cable, a music centre with selection of tapes and CDs. There is a guest bathroom off the sitting area, with glass tiled, walk-in shower.
Steps lead down from the gallery to a covered living space below, which is open on all sides save for the explosion of green fan palms and foliage that brings the garden into the area. To the front it gives onto a stone patio and sun terrace that features a small octagonal pool. The pool sits on the edge of the hillside providing an enticing and cooling spot to soak up the views. There is an outside shower, barbecue, and lawns to the side with a garden hammock. The views look straight down to the coast and to Anse du Cap Bay, where the resort LeSport is located. The villa has an acre of gardens, which have been lovingly maintained and are brimming with palms, to create a delightful private retreat.
The bedroom is located off the upper gallery to the right of the entrance and has a king size bed with a mosquito net dome. Jalousie doors open out onto a small veranda with seating and encroaching palm fronds poking through the decorative ironwork. The bedroom has an incredibly romantic bathroom with an indoor garden which has a step down into a huge tiled bath/shower. |

Beach & Swimming There are a couple of small volcanic sand beaches at Anse du Cap and Smugglers Cove. The latter has excellent snorkelling. A ten minute drive will get you to Causeway Beach, where there are two stretches of white sand leading to Pigeon Island National Park. The northern area of the beach is popular with St Lucian on weekends, especially bank holidays, and has a picnic area. Reduit Beach is the island’s most popular beach and is located on the other side of Rodney Bay, with a lovely mile long stretch of powder soft sand. It is fairly active. It has a few hotels and a good variety of watersports is available, including waterskiing, parasailing, jetski, sunfish and hobie cat sailing. It takes about ten minutes to reach by car.
La Mer has a small octagonal swimming pool/large plunge pool with entry steps and rail. |

Sports & Recreation The 18-hole, 6829 yard, par 71 course at the St Lucia Golf & Country Club at Cap Estate is less than five minutes drive away and has a pro shop, driving range and restaurant. The nearest tennis courts open to the public (courts must be booked in advance) are at the St Lucia Racquet Club at Club St Lucia, also in Cap Estate, which has seven floodlit Laykold cushioned tennis courts, a squash court and gym. There are also two squash courts at the St Lucia Yacht Club at Reduit in Rodney Bay. The Sportivo fitness centre at Rodney Heights is St Lucia’s largest gym and offers yoga, Tai Chi and Karate classes. There is a full service spa at LeSport Hotel which you can visit with a day pass. |

Locality La Mer is located on a hillside in Cap Estate, a large residential development in the north of St Lucia. There are many luxury homes dotted on the hillsides of the Cap, some holiday homes and some residential. The estate has an 18 hole golf course and a couple of resorts, and is conveniently close to two of the best restaurants in St Lucia - the Great House and Tao at LeSport. Views from the estate extend to Pigeon Island National Park, a forty four acre National Trust reserve which was joined to the mainland by a man-made causeway in 1972, where there are two white sandy beaches. The island features ruins of many 18th century British and French military buildings including Fort Rodney, and has an Interpretation Centre, a restaurant featuring local cuisine, a historical themed pub and restaurant, and lookout point at the top of the fort. The island is also the main venue of the annual St Lucia Jazz Festival, held each May which attracts a host of international stars. A ferry runs between the island and Rodney Bay on an hourly schedule.
Rodney Bay is St Lucia’s busiest tourist area, where there are hotels, good restaurants and bars, a shopping mall, banks, mini marts and a nearby supermarket (on the main road) called Super J and a very lively nightlife. It has a busy marina and attracts over 200 boats for the annual ARC (trans-Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which usually sees its first arrivals in early December. The nearby village of Gros Islet hosts the now famous Friday Night Jump Up, an all night street party. The Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island area is a ten minute journey by car. Castries the capital and George F L Charles Airport (formerly known as Vigie) which receives inter-island flights only, are about 25 minutes drive |
