Review Môr-Gân Villa is a very pleasant two-bedroom villa tucked away in a quiet corner of the L’Anse aux Epines peninsular, a mainly residential district in the south of Grenada. The house, which is modern but uses traditional Caribbean features, is relatively simple and quite compact, but it has a really welcoming feel to it and has all you need for an excellent barefoot holiday by the sea. The name Môr-Gân means ‘Sea Song’ in Welsh and so it suits the house, which looks west from a small hillside over a sea lagoon where waves play in the background.
The house sits at the end of a cul de sac on one of the penisulars in L’Anse aux Epines and so it is extremely quiet and private. As you arrive you will find Môr-Gân partially hidden by a trellis of tropical flowers, but it reveals itself as you come to the front door. It has classic Caribbean design, a square imprint with a light double-pitched tile roof and some gingerbread fretwork. It is painted in bright colours, white and primrose yellow with turquoise trim. All the rooms face the bay and at the front they have louvered French doors that give out onto a veranda running the full width of the house. This gives Môr-Gân an open feel and allows you to sit in the shade for much of the day while still being in the open air.
Inside, Môr-Gân is light and bright, with white walls and pitched wooden ceilings. As you walk in, you come directly into the main kitchen/living room. Actually you walk into the kitchen part, which is at the rear of the room, and separated from the living section by a breakfast bar. The kitchen cupboards are painted peach, but the turquoise trim from outside also makes it inside, onto the door frames and the sea shell sconces. Just beyond the kitchen, left and right, are the doors into the bedrooms. Then you come into the ‘living’ part of the room, which is light and pleasant, with white tiles and walls and bright red furnishings. A sofa and armchairs made by Grenadian furniture-maker Rudolph Hererra face one another from the walls either side. There is a cable TV with 40 channels and a cd player.
Almost the entire front wall of the living room opens out onto a veranda at the front of the house. Again, although it is modern, tiled throughout, the veranda has some traditional Caribbean features such as gingerbread pointing and wooden criss-cross balustrades. It has a dining table for six, some garden armchairs and of course the best of the view. It looks west over the garden and the lagoon towards the sunset (which sets over land on the other side of the bay).
Below the veranda there is a small tiled sundeck with sunloungers and parasols and beyond here the lawn runs straight ahead down to the lagoon, where there is a small cliff of rocky coastline. The garden is sectioned by large borders of tropical plants. One of these screens the pool, which is off to the right, another hides the house next door. The plants, hardy perennials that thrive so close to the sea, were all recommended by the late Keith St Bernard, a leading Grenadian horticulturalist who helped the owner. At the foot of the garden, a jetty reaches out from the waterfront into the bay. From here you can swim out to the reef. The jetty is also an excellent place to sunbathe. It’s also worth mentioning that there is a small sunbathing deck close to the front door on the other side of the house, where it is cool in the afternoon (when the west-facing side of the house gets the sun).
The pool sits hidden away by tropical growth between Môr-Gân and the house next door (actually the home of the owner of Môr-Gân). Nick Hughes built both houses, but as owner of Spice Isle Villas, the villa rental agency, he is quite aware of the need for privacy and so he has screened to two properties off from one another.
Back in the villa, the two bedrooms, one decorated in yellow, the other yellow and blue, sit either side of the living room and look out to the front onto the veranda. They both have twin beds (which can be made into a king bed by arrangement) with wooden headboards and muslin nets to hang over you if you wish to have natural ventilation at night (rooms can also be air-conditioned if you prefer). At the rear they each have a small en suite bathroom with a shower and at the front louvered French windows that give onto the veranda.
Môr-Gân is quite a simple house, but it is nicely hidden away and it is ideal for easy Caribbean living for a small family or two couples that know one another well. |

Beach & Swimming The pool at Môr-Gân is quite large and it is tightly sheltered by a screen of tropical greenery, so it is very private. It is a saline pool (with natural chlorine from added salt). Sunbathing areas are at the villa itself.
There is no beach at Môr-Gân but there is good swimming with no currents in the bay right beneath the house. There is a reef on which you can snorkel. The closest recognised beach is L’Anse aux Epines, which is at the head of Prickly Bay just a few minutes drive away and it is not far to Grand Anse and the beaches along the Point Salines peninsular. |

Sports & Recreation There is a 9-hole golf course about fifteen minutes drive away. Scuba diving is available through several dive shops on Grand Anse and deep sea fishing can easily be arranged too. It is possible to arrange for a massage therapist to come to your villa. |

Locality Môr-Gân Villa is set in the mainly residential area of L’Anse aux Epines in the south of Grenada. There is a small mini-mart not far away but otherwise you will have to go to Grand Anse to find larger supermarkets. St George’s, the capital of Grenada, is about fifteen minutes drive away. It is the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean and well worth a visit. There are a few restaurants within a short drive, on the road that leads into the L’Anse aux Epines area. For a smart meal try the Gary Rhodes restaurant at The Calabash and for something less formal the Red Crab. |

Getting Around Hiring a car to explore the island is easily arranged and is a great addition to a stay in Grenada. You can travel to the remoter beaches and the island’s many excellent beach bars, and eat out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. You will also have to collect groceries, so we recommend a car with all villa-based holidays.
We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company, Y&R Car Rentals) or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the hotel. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, as well as during August and Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.
Buses do run to the area, particularly in the morning (7.30-8.30am) and again in the afternoon (3-4pm), but they are infrequent otherwise. Elsewhere in Grenada, on the main road routes, the bus service is generally frequent and rapid. |
