Description
Mahogany Pod is one of the six Mahogany Bay townhouses that are positioned on the gently curving shores of Paynes Bay with delightful views towards The Cliff – one of the finest restaurants on Barbados - which peeps out from the low sea cliffs in the distance. There is access straight from the main road into a shared driveway, with parking for one vehicle per apartment and some additional parking for guests. There are six townhouses in total and they each have a private patio that gives onto a lawned area from which there is a pathway leading to a gated access out onto a lovely sandy beach, and views along the coast in both directions. The houses are ideal for people who prefer to be in a less secluded setting, and like the activity and company of other guests.

There are three individually furnished townhouses available for holiday rentals, and they each have the same floor plan (laid out over three floors) and a similar style of décor and ambiance. The buildings have a pleasant contemporary Caribbean design, with Dutch style gable roofs, coral stone facades with traditional wood fretwork, jalousie shutters and lofty entrance porches with fanlight window. An attractive mix of tropical shrubs, palms and flowering plants around the entrance and driveway makes an appealing setting. A light and airy entrance hall into the apartments leads straight through to an air-conditioned (with ceiling fans), open-plan living area, off which a curved flight of wood topped coral stone stairs sweep up to the upper bedroom floors. The interior décor is clean and elegant looking, creating an atmosphere of coolness and calm, with all white walls, off-white floor tiles with an interesting pebble border inlay and comfortable furnishings which compliment a tropical climate. A sitting area with upholstered sofas and chairs occupies one end of the room (cable TV, VCR and CD player) whilst the other end serves as the formal dining area. Here there are two large French doors that lead out to the covered terrace, giving the room a feeling of being nearly open air. A good size Italian style kitchen with polished granite tops, all very well equipped, is incorporated into the living space, being set opposite the dining area with breakfast bar, so that cooking becomes part of the holiday. The room has been designed to enable guests enjoy the location whether inside or outside. Out on the covered terrace is the plunge pool and another dining area with wet bar, then an area of lawn with steps that lead to a gate at the bottom of the garden. From here you go straight down onto the beach.

Upstairs are the three bedrooms. Two twin rooms on the first floor, each have an en suite shower room with marble-topped vanity units and mosaic tiled showers areas. These rooms share a balcony with lovely views to the ocean, and are simply but well furnished. The Master bedroom is on the top floor and is very impressive in size, with a lovely pickled pine tray ceiling and room for a king sized bed at one end and sitting area to the other. This is a lovely room with private balcony and fabulous views of the Caribbean Sea. There is a separate dressing area with wall safe and a luxurious en suite bathroom. This has a corner tub, a separate mosaic tiled shower and double marble topped vanity unit. All bedrooms are air-conditioned, have ceiling fans and all bathrooms have hair dryers.

Stop press: 01 May 2008 - construction work on the Waterside development (due for completion end of April 2008) is still ongoing in the vicinity of this property and there may be the possibility of some noise disturbance. The managing agents will be honest about the level of noise, so be sure to ask about the current situation if you are interested in booking this villa.

Beach & Swimming
The beach to the front of the property is reached by eight steps from the garden gate (there is an outside shower) and does not attract much activity. It feels fairly private and has good swimming and snorkelling. The townhouses each have a plunge pool measuring 11ft x 5ft and 3ft in depth.

Sports & Recreation
The Sandy Lane golf club, tennis courts, and dedicated spa are located within about 5 minutes drive of Mahogany Bay, as are a range of water sports from Sandy Lane Hotel’s beach. There is a fitness studio at West Coast Mall approximately 7 minutes away.

Locality
Mahogany Bay is located just along the beach from Tamarind Cove Hotel and Daphne’s restaurant to the north, followed by Treasure Beach. This strip of coast is known as the “Platinum Coast” and it’s where all the hustle and bustle really starts, with Sandy Lane only a few minutes drive away. Just across the road you will find a Texaco service station which also sells snacks and groceries, and freshly caught fish can be purchased from the seafront next door. A short drive up Holders Hill opposite will take you to the Barbados Polo Club. And a few minutes further north you will reach the heart of St James at Holetown. This is also the main shopping district. Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional-looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in-store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening. Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.

There is a host of restaurants within 15 minutes drive along the main West Coast Road in either direction of Mahogany Bay. You might consider the famous Cliff Restaurant, about ten minutes away to the south - also look out for Scarlet and Calabaza in this direction. Heading north beyond Holetown you could try celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 15 minutes north, or the Fish Pot. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s.

Useful Hints
Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival. The cook will then prepare a welcome meal. Thereafter, staff will shop for you during your stay if you wish to delegate this chore. A 15% service charge plus VAT will be levied on the value of all shopping bills. Prepayment for your provisional groceries should be made when sending the final balance for the villa. Please see here for Bajan Services
general grocery pack list with approximate prices.

Miscellaneous items such as airport transfers, extra beds and baby equipment are also payable in advance (see here for a price list). In the event that Bajan Services can only provide an estimated cost for customized shopping lists, or where the final payment for your villa has been made prior to other requests, you will be required to complete a credit card authorization form.

Please note that rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’ about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.

Young children will need to be well supervised as the plunge pool, which cannot be enclosed, is situated directly off the living area on the adjacent terrace, and please note that the bedrooms are located upstairs and there are no stair gates.

Chanel No. 5 and Starfish are similar 3 bedroom Mahogany Bay townhouses which are also available for rental through managing agents Bajan Services.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers take approximately 45 minutes and should be paid for in advance with the final payment for your villa. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by
St James Travel & Tours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown can easily be reached by public transport, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
