Description
Set atop a ridge overlooking the North-West Coast of Barbados, Mullins Mill presides over eight acres of glorious tropical gardens, including a jungle-like gully with a landscaped natural water course and a small bridge leading to its splendid pool area. From here there are stunning views to the Caribbean Sea. The leafy environs of Gibbs and Mullins, where Mullins Mill has its own beach house, are a short drive away. This area of St Peter has a much quieter feel to it than further down the coast in St James. It was traditionally the choice of those seeking a retreat from the more fashionable beaches, and remains so, with Mullins Mill the perfect hideaway. Although there has been some development within the area over recent years, not much has changed and the only activity of note takes place around the former Mullins Beach Bar, as it has done for decades.

In the 17th Century Mullins was a large working sugar plantation. The original sugar mill, built in the 1690s, now forms the nucleus of the main house. Anyone with a love for places with a sense of history will find Mullins Mill of particular interest. The outside terrace, for instance, is made from old English bricks which were once used as ships’ ballast. The original entrance (which is upstairs) to the mill is rarely used which seems a shame, however the part is used to display a collection of Barbadian antiques and features a lovely painted ceiling of puffy white clouds in a blue sky. The original mill building has now been incorporated into the building, and on the ground floor the actual mill room is now a study. The kitchen is on one side and on the other is a formal dining area with a handsome round antique mahogany table, large enough to seat twelve for dinner. A series of shuttered doors open out to the covered brick terrace, which has a casual sitting area with canvas and rattan chairs to one end, and a glass topped wrought dining table for twelve where breakfast is usually served.

The terrace leads onto lawns with views of the Caribbean Sea through the tree tops. For a more commanding view there is a wooden gazebo perched on the edge of the ridge, a splendid spot for cocktails at sunset. To the north side of the terrace is a separate annex which contains the elegantly furnished, formal sitting room, known as the “Shell Room”. This has views to the gardens and coast, and features not only a collection of shells but also a large wall mounted carved coral stone shell. Guests use this quiet room for reading or playing cards and it is ideal for pre-dinner cocktails.

Upstairs in the main house, a wooden gallery is comfortably furnished for relaxing and watching TV, having fine views over the lawn, and leads to the Master bedroom which is next to the mill. This has natural varnished wood floors, a private balcony facing the gully, and a lovely king size four poster Balinese bed with cane headboard and muslin drapes, and a large en suite bathroom with tub shower. It also has a dressing area with a single bed. The actual mill, which is accessed from the gallery, has a circular sitting room, a formal reception room (the original entrance), and on the upper level of the mill tower itself a charming circular bedroom. This romantic room has a wrought iron four poster queen size bed, and has an en suite bathroom with shower only. Both bedrooms are air-conditioned and have ceiling fans. The master also has a safe and hairdryer.

The vine covered guest cottage opposite the main house has two spacious double bedrooms, each with its own en suite bathroom with showers only. Both are air-conditioned and have ceiling fans. The downstairs bedroom has built-in seating and a private patio overlooking the canopy of trees to the coast, whilst upstairs the bedroom has a private deck with fabulous views to the coast. A further two smaller double bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom with shower only, are located in the gardens off the drive-way, just across from the main house.

A pleasant walk through the gardens, past the water course and bridge over the gully, leads to the oasis-like and very inviting infinity swimming pool with adjoining Jacuzzi. This has been built on the edge of the ridge and has splendid views to the coast, with a rear sun deck next to the dining gazebo with wet bar, and an unusual hand-painted mural of Venus. A sitting area extends under a canvas awning attached to the gazebo and looks across the pool to the Caribbean Sea in the distance. Behind the swimming pool the garden opens out to an area of lawn where guests can relax or play tennis on the private court.

Mullins Mill has a private beach house on Gibbs Beach. It has a sitting area, kitchenette with wet bar and opens out onto a sun terrace and garden with built-in barbecue. There is also a bathroom with shower and two changing rooms. A beachside gazebo with built-in table and chairs can seat twelve.

Beach & Swimming
Mullins Mill’s beach house is situated on one of Barbados’ best beaches, Gibbs Beach on Mullins Bay, which runs into Mullins Beach and boasts a long stretch of glorious golden sand and some of the best swimming on the West Coast. The beach house has a living area with kitchenette and wet bar leading out to a beachfront terrace with built-in barbecue and dining gazebo. There is also a bathroom with shower and changing rooms. Sun loungers, beach umbrellas and children's sand toys are provided.

At Mullins Mill itself, an immensely inviting infinity swimming pool with adjoining Jacuzzi has splendid views to the coast, with a rear sun deck next to the dining gazebo with wet bar, and unusual hand-painted mural of Venus. A sitting area extends under a canvas awning attached to the gazebo and looks across the pool to the Caribbean Sea in the distance. The pool measures approximately 33ft by 19 ft.

Sports & Recreation
Mullins Mill has its own floodlit tennis court. Use of the owner's 21ft Mastercraft speedboat for waterskiing and inflatable rides is included in the villa's 6 bedroom rental rates - oil and petrol extra. The nearest golf course is Royal Westmoreland about 20 minutes drive away, which has some tee times open to outsiders in the mid morning, otherwise there are two courses open to the public at Sandy Lane about 25 minutes away.

Locality
A short drive up from Mullins and Gibbs Beach, Mullins Mill is located on a ridge overlooking the coast, within eight acres of extremely well tended grounds. Speightstown, the island’s second largest town, is approximately 7 minutes by car. Once known as Little Bristol because of connections to Bristol on the west coast of England, Speightstown still has a feel of old time Barbados about it. There is a small fish market on the seafront, fruit and vegetable sellers known as “hucksters” on the road side, a couple of local restaurants and bars and a smattering of shops, plus a reasonably well stocked supermarket. The nearest restaurant and beach bar is Mannie’s at Suga Suga on Mullins Beach. Other good restaurants within 10 minutes drive are The Terrace at Cobblers Cove hotel, Mangoes by the Sea in Speightstown, La Mer at Port St Charles and The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour both north of Speightstown and heading south, the Lone Star.

Useful Hints
Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) to make sure that the chef is aware of your food preferences before your arrival, so that they can do the shopping and prepare a welcome meal. There are no grocery packs involved for the larger villas with butlers, and staff will shop accordingly. Once you have settled in, all meal requirements are discussed and planned with either your butler or chef, who will prepare menus and do all of the shopping. You will be billed for food and beverages toward the end of your stay, and a 5% service charge plus VAT will be levied.

Miscellaneous items such as airport transfers, extra beds and baby equipment are payable in advance (
see here for a price list). In the event that Bajan Services can only provide an estimated cost for customized shopping lists, or where the final payment for your villa has been made prior to other requests, you will be required to complete a credit card authorization form.

Please note that rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’ about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers take approximately 50 minutes and should be paid for in advance with the final payment for your villa. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by
St James Travel & Tours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Due to its secluded location a hired car is essential (and anyway is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays), unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle(s) to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
