Rental options Necker Island is generally hired as a whole island, in the way of a private villa. The all-inclusive rate includes transfers for all the guests, accommodation, all meals and drinks (alcoholic and otherwise) and all the on-island sports and activities. In addition, the staff will be pro-active (if you wish) in suggesting and arranging any number of outings and activities, such meals served on the beach, picnics on other islands, days out in the boats.
In addition to this Necker Island also offers (during certain weeks of the year) what it calls Celebration Weeks, in which couples can book individual rooms. They will then share the island with other guests, but many of the activities are of course the same.
They also have Family Fun Week designed especially around families in which there are special activities designed around children. These include boat races, tennis tournaments and other sports and of course treasure hunts.
Necker Island is a part of the Virgin Limited Edition, a handful of extremely individual and luxurious properties around the world. Other properties include Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco, Ulusaba, a safari lodge South Africa, the Virgin Spa at Natirar in New Jersey in the States and the Roof Gardens, a club in Kensington in London. |

Locality Necker Island lies off the far north of Virgin Gorda, not far from the North Sound. It can only be reached by boat and it is relatively remote. The closest island is Eustatia, where there are a number of private villas. Beyond it is Prickly Pear Cay, which has a good beach bar with some watersports and a couple of secluded beaches. Farther round the North Sound, beyond the reef protecting the Sound, is Mosquito Island, which is also owned by Sir Richard Branson. Opposite there on the mainland, across the main entrance to the Sound is Leverick Bay. Here you will find a hotel and marina, a restaurant, bar and beach bar (with a very lively Friday evening jump up), some self-catering rooms and many private villas perched on the steep hillside above. Farther round on the mainland is the last settlement in this area, Gun Creek, a local village and the ferrypoint from which the staff cross from Virgin Gorda to the hotels. The road leads from here up the incredibly steep hill and along the ridge to the south of the island and the Valley or Spanish Town.
The North Sound is quite a popular anchorage and so there often visiting yachts and sometimes crews taking time off. Besides Leverick Bay there is a handful of hotels, including the Bitter End Yacht Club, which specialises in sailing (in yachts of every size). The hotel is stretched along the waterfront and there are several shops and bars where you can linger for a drink among the action of the yachts and their crews. Just offshore here is Saba Rock, literally a blip in the water. Once a raffish and distinctly riotous bar made of shabby wood, now it is a more prim affair with a bar and restaurant. Beyond Bitter End in the other direction is Biras Creek, which has a fine dining room overlooking the Sound and the ocean the other side. |
