Description
Oceana presides over an ocean front location within the manicured grounds of Tobago Plantations Beach & Golf Resort, which is on the windward southern coast of Tobago. It is set on the Atlantic Ocean and so there is a constant breeze on the estate, which can be fairly strong at certain times. Oceana however is located on a south facing peninsular and its sheltered position reduces the wind to a nice breeze. The ocean is less lively here, but it is still unsuitable for swimming. Tobago Plantations Beach & Golf Resort is still being developed. The majority of owners of properties are wealthy Trinidadians (about 75%) who use the houses and townhouses as holiday homes, while the remaining owners are from the UK and Europe. A number of villas are available for rent. Oceana is in a plot reserved for around 16 private villas all in a similar style and standard. It is close to the Petit Trou Lagoon, a calm area of brackish water backed by mangrove and lined with boardwalks. Other plots are available for building behind the lagoon and individual villas still being built nearby.

All of the individual villas conform to the plantation house theme. There are several designs to choose from, but all have distinctive features of Trinidadian architecture which include fretwork and vaulted ceilings. Oceana is based on the ‘Mansion’ design and is a one storey villa that is rather deceptive from the outside. On entering the villa one is struck by the huge amount of living space, an impression aided by the lofty vaulted ceiling, all white floor tiles and either white or cheerful yellow walls. The centre of the villa comprises an open-plan, split level living area with ceiling fans. Just off the entrance to one side is a powder room and to the other the laundry room, then the entrance hall opens to the main living area which has a well furnished TV area with comfortable, plump upholstered sofas. Opposite, partially enclosed, is a decent sized, very well equipped galley kitchen, with bar opening to a breakfast area just below the TV lounge. A few steps below it is the main living area, which is large enough for a small child to a cycle around. A formal dining area with a large, wooden dining table sits at one end and at the other is a well furnished sitting area. The full length of the room and the two corners is made up by French doors which open to the covered terrace. With the cream drapes pulled back and all doors flung open, the villa has a wonderfully light and airy ambiance.

Outside, the covered terrace has a casual sitting area with rattan furnishings, and also a dining area. Beyond it on the pool terrace are further options for dining al fresco with umbrella tables pool side. An inviting free form, infinity edge swimming pool is set within a spacious tiled sun terrace. The pool has a shallow edge to loll in, but one can also opt for the Jacuzzi tub which is set within its own gazebo. Beyond the pool is the lawned garden which leads to the water’s edge, where a delightful wooden deck has been built so that guests can sit and enjoy the fresh sea air.

Oceana has four well furnished bedrooms, two Master bedrooms and two twins located either side of the living areas. The east wing has a twin room with two double beds with dark stained mahogany bedsteads and matching furnishings, with bold coloured fabrics (lime green, turquoise and purple) creating quite a masculine feel. Next door the large Master bedroom has a king size bed with an impressive pale wood carved bedstead and matching furnishings, including marble topped bedside cabinets and a large TV cabinet. It has pastel green and pink fabrics, a walk-in dressing room and French doors to a private ocean facing terrace. The opposite and west facing wing also has a twin bedroom with double sleigh beds, with cheerful blue and yellow fabrics, and a second Master bedroom with a king size mahogany spindle bed, and nautical feel in its navy and red fabrics. It also has a comfortable snuggle chairs and like the first Master bedroom it has an ocean facing terrace area. All bedrooms have cable TV, are air-conditioned, have ceiling fans and luxury en suite tiled bathrooms with showers and hairdryers.

Beach & Swimming
Oceana is set directly on the Atlantic ocean, where the shorefront is rocky and therefore unsuitable for swimming. The resort does have a 5000ft stretch of sandy beach known as Lowlands. The swimming conditions are varied, but the area is popular with kitesurfers because of the wind. This stretch of beach ends at the VHL Tobago Golf & Spa Resort (former Tobago Hilton) which is approximately five minutes walk - hotel currently closed. Oceana’s infinity edge, freeform swimming pool is 13ft by 50ft and approximately 6ft at the deepest point, with steps to the shallow end. There is also a shallow shelf to loll on.

Sports & Recreation
Tobago Plantations Golf & Country Club has an 18 hole 7005 yard 72 par PGA cart only course. There is a 5 Star Padi Instructor Development Dive Centre, two tennis courts at the VHL Tobago Golf & Spa Resort (former Tobago Hilton) plus a fully equipped gymnasium and spa. Kayaking tours of the Petit Trou Lagoon to the south of the resort can be arranged. Note - the hotel has been closed since late 2008.

Locality
Tobago Plantations Beach & Golf Resort (a former sugar plantation, coconut and then short crop plantation, with honeydew melons and pineapple) is currently being transformed into a first class residential community. Facilities include an extremely well maintained 18 hole PGA golf course with club house and restaurant, with a further 9 holes planned in the future, and the 200 room VHL Tobago Golf & Spa Resort (former Tobago Hilton). There is also a wide variety of homes ranged around the property, ranging from individual villas with private pools to apartments, to townhouses and villa clusters and, planned for 2015, a marina. The resort has been landscaped to retain natural features such the mangroves (through which there is a series of boardwalks for nature lovers), and two freshwater lakes, one where you can fish and another which attracts some interesting bird life and is home to a couple of large caymans.

Located just off the Claude Noel Highway, most things are within easy reach. Scarborough the capital is less than ten minutes away by car. For groceries try Gourmet Foods at RT Morshead in Bethany, about five minutes, or Pennysavers, about ten minutes. The VHL Tobago Golf & Spa Resort has two restaurants and a pub with live entertainment on selected evenings.

Note - the VHL Tobago Golf & Spa Resort has been closed since late 2008.

Getting Around
Although most things are relatively close at hand and you are in an estate, a hired car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Thrifty Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately 2-3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Tobago or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
