Description
Reeds House is a very distinctive four storey building on Reeds Bay on the West Coast of Barbados. With its domed turret lit up at night, it is set back from the beach and has direct access and views to the Caribbean Sea. It was transformed some years ago from a rather plain looking hotel block into a prestigious collection of fourteen high quality apartments. Reeds Bay is a virtually private beach. There are no neighbours to the north and no hotels nearby, so the area is generally fairly tourist free. This northern part of St James is certainly free of the hustle and bustle of further down the coast, but close enough not to feel cut off, which is a nice compromise. The forecourt of Reeds House has parking bays allocated to each apartment and a reception area in the centre of the building offering a Concierge Service. Walk through and you are straight onto the beach. The upper level units are reached either by the elevator or by stairs.

Apart from the penthouses, all units have a similar layout and a brief description of each is below. Generally the entrance door leads straight into the open plan living area, which has a very well equipped and stylish kitchen to one side, with striking black granite work surfaces and a breakfast bar. The kitchen is very much part of the experience at Reeds House. A comfortable sitting area leads out via French doors to a covered patio or balcony which has a sitting area and delightful spa pool (which can be lit up at night) and a fountain which is pleasant to both watch and listen to. The ground floor units lead out to the gardens with grassy areas to plonk your sunlounger and plants to give some privacy to the spa pool area whilst still allowing glimpses of the ocean. The upper floor units have their spa pools set on the edge of their extended balcony, so that you have a fantastic vantage point to enjoy uninterrupted sea views and stunning sunsets. The other half of the covered patio/balcony (off the second bedroom) has a partial wall to give a sense of intimacy, and serves as the dining area, with wet bar and ceiling fan. The upper level units again have fabulous views from here.

The one and two bedroom apartments have bedrooms leading off the main living area, and the master bedrooms have a small private terrace or balcony, walk-in dressing room with safe and a large, luxurious tiled bathroom with corner tub, separate walk-in shower, WC and bidet. The second bedroom leads via French doors to the dining patio/balcony and has an en suite bathroom with shower only. The bathroom is also accessed via the living area and has a foyer in between which houses the washer-dryer.

Number One Reeds House & Penthouse Suite – A 4 bedroom apartment taking up the entire south wing of Reeds House and set out over four floors. The ground floor leads into the kitchen and living room, with powder room and laundry to the rear. Off the living room is a bedroom with cable TV, walk-in dressing room/safe, en suite bathroom, a corner tub and separate shower. This room and the sitting room lead out to the covered patio with its wet bar, fridge, large carved coral stone dining table for ten and the spa pool set just beyond in the garden. There is a built-in barbecue in the garden, sunloungers, a shower for rinsing off and direct access onto the beach.

The first floor has an air-conditioned sitting room with cable TV, DVD and VCR, a powder room to the rear and two bedrooms, of which the one to the rear has an en suite shower room whilst the larger ocean front bedroom has an adjacent balcony with wonderful sea views and an en suite bathroom with corner tub and separate walk-in shower. There is an inner stairway with lockable access linking it to the Penthouse Suite which allows these units to be rented together. The apartment has two CD players, ADSL internet access and WiFi.

Penthouse Suite - The second floor and third floor (roof top) make up the Penthouse Suite. Its entrance leads into the kitchen and dining area with table for six. To the rear is a powder room and laundry room. The bedroom has a private balcony with outstanding sea views and is equipped with cable TV, VCR and a CD/radio/cassette player. To the rear there is a walk-in dressing room and en suite bathroom with corner tub and separate shower. An inner stairway to the front of the unit leads up to the stunning roof deck, which has a spa pool, dining area which can seat up to eight under a partially covered area, wet bar and built-in seating. There are a couple of sunloungers, an ice machine and gas barbecue. This is the perfect wining and dining spot. The apartment has ADSL internet access and WiFi.

There is the option to take the entire unit which includes 2 spa pools, or as a three bedroom with one spa pool, or two bedrooms with a spa pool or as a one bedroom penthouse suite with spa pool on the roof deck. All bedrooms have twin beds, which can be made up as a king. When the unit is rented as a 3 or 4 bedroom unit, there are two staff - a cook and maid/laundress.

Reeds House Number 3 - a 1 bedroom apartment on the ground floor on the north wing, with a spa pool terrace and dining area with pale green wicker chairs, leading out to the gardens and across to the beach. The apartment has a high standard of interior décor featuring blond wood furnishings against mostly pale neutral tones with the sitting area complimented by a pale blue striped upholstered sofa and reading chair. The elegant master bedroom has a king size bed and a recently refurbished en suite bathroom in pale marble, with walk-in shower and large tub. The apartment has cable TV, DVD player and a portable CD player. No children accepted.

Reeds House Number 5, 'Surf’s Up' - a 2 bedroom corner apartment on the ground floor at the end of the north wing, with a small corner garden leading around to the beach. There’s a small wrought iron table with two chairs next to the terrace and also table to seat four, with umbrella, by the pool. Nicely furnished with a comfortable upholstered sofa in the sitting room, there’s a very romantic master bedroom in blues and whites with king size bed dressed with a back drape. The second bedroom, in pale yellow, has a canopy with hand painted posts, over twin beds pushed together. The apartment has cable TV, DVD, VCR, a portable CD/radio/cassette player, snorkelling equipment, small grill, ADSL internet access, WiFi and VoIP.

Reeds House Number 9 – a 2 bedroom apartment on the first floor with wonderful sea views through coconut palms. The dining terrace has a glass topped white wicker table and chairs to seat four. Cheerful décor with original local artwork and rattan furnishings. master bedroom has a four poster king size bed, whilst the second bedroom has a double bed. The apartment has cable TV, DVD and a CD/radio/cassette player.

Reeds House Number 10 – a 2 bedroom northern end apartment on the first floor, elegantly furnished in a contemporary Caribbean style with cream, white and pale gold palettes used for the soft furnishings. The master bedroom has a very fine mahogany four poster king size bed with canopy, whilst the second bedroom has a king size bed with pickled pine, lattice headboard. The dining balcony has a glass-topped rattan table with seating for six, and the spa pool balcony has four comfortable teak garden chairs. The apartment has a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) cable TV, DVD, selection of DVDs and a portable CD/radio/cassette player. No children under 12 years.

Locality
Reeds House is located off the main West Coast road (Highway 1) in Weston, between Holetown and Speightstown in the northern part of St James. It is not far from Fairmont’s Royal Pavilion and Glitter Bay Hotels. There are one or two local shops and rum shops in the area, but the nearest shopping district is Holetown (about 10 minutes south by car). Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening.

Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with Police Station, Post Office, Parish Church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.

There is a host of restaurants ranging from posh to pizzas within 15 minutes’ drive in either direction of Reeds House, from the celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 5 minutes, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take about 15 minutes, both heading south. Also look out for the Tides, Daphne’s, Scarlet and Calabaza. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s.

Useful Hints
Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival. The cook will then prepare a welcome meal. Thereafter, staff will shop for you during your stay if you wish to delegate this chore. A 15% service charge plus VAT will be levied on the value of all shopping bills. Prepayment for your provisional groceries should be made when sending the final balance for the villa. Please see here for Bajan Services
general grocery pack list with approximate prices.

Miscellaneous items such as airport transfers, extra beds and baby equipment are also payable in advance (see here for a price list). In the event that Bajan Services can only provide an estimated cost for customized shopping lists, or where the final payment for your villa has been made prior to other requests, you will be required to complete a credit card authorization form.

Please note that rental rates for villas in Barbados do not include ‘tips’ about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you are booking direct ask the villa management company to send a taxi to meet you at the airport. Your airport transfers take approximately 45 minutes and should be paid for in advance with the final payment for your villa. Alternatively, if you would prefer to be taken care of from the minute you arrive at the airport, with a range of services that can include limousine transfers, a Concierge Service is offered by
St James Travel & Tours.

If you are booking through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of your holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown or Speightstown can easily be reached by public transport, a hire car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with
Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately three hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day.
