Description Sunwatch is an exceptionally well-appointed ocean-view home with a subtle and artsy décor. It is set in two acres of finely landscaped gardens in the Sugar Hill Resort community, which includes the David Lloyd Tennis Centre and Village, and is one of a number of luxury villas which occupy a coral stone ridge overlooking the St James area and Caribbean Sea. Sunwatch presides over a prime spot at the edge of the ridge, and has uninterrupted views of the ocean right up the West Coast and as far as St Lucy. This is an ideal setting for those who would like to be in a resort with a residential feel and yet still be within easy reach of all that the West Coast has to offer.
Designed with a contemporary twist on traditional West Indian architecture, Sunwatch is the work of well known local firm Gillespie and Steel, which has ensured that the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea have been incorporated to the fullest. On approach, as you come into the sweeping circular driveway, you are presented with a series of pavilions spread out over one level. From here a wooden bridge spanning a courtyard garden leads across to an entrance gazebo. There is also a lily pond, terraces, a small waterfall and a delightful breakfast spot. Then an impressive set of heavy, studded, hardwood doors reveal an equally memorable living room. It has a high, vaulted roof of bleached timber, inset with small window panes on all sides to provide an extra source of natural light. The formal sitting room has a contemporary Caribbean design with honey coloured marble tiles, which create a cool, expansive feel. It has been elegantly furnished with comfortable, modern chocolate brown and cream velvet sofas, and some unusual short chaise lounges in a toffee coloured chenille-like fabric. At their centre is a simply designed marble-topped coffee table and around the edge are three sets of teak doors that open onto the main covered veranda. The décor at Sunwatch is modern, unfussy and greater than the standard style generally to be found in villas. Accessories, artwork and sculptures are few, but they are chosen for impact, even for a touch of humour. Look out for the large, carved, wooden hand-shaped stool, the rustic handmade metal candelabra and black lampshades.
The covered veranda has been well furnished with good quality wicker and rattan and an antique carved bench. It has splendid views of the coast and leads down to the pool and sun terrace. A small wood decked bridge joins the formal dining room, which is actually a smaller covered pavilion open on all sides, with a bar/serving area to the rear which adjoins the kitchen. There is a separate laundry and maid’s room off the garage and storage area.
The dining room features a most unusual square table that seats twelve. It is made from a varnished sheet of tarnished metal and has a bold, rustic look and sturdy dark wooden chairs to suit. The handmade metal candelabras complete the picture. On the opposite side of the main living area is a study, and from the veranda another wooden deck leads to the den, which has its own terrace. The den features comfy corner seating and an entertainment system, including a 42” plasma TV with DVD, VCR and satellite, plus a CD system, with surround sound to all social areas. The room has its own bathroom with a steam shower.
Steps lead from the veranda and den onto the outer terrace, from where there are steps first down to the lawn and then to the tiled sun terrace that skirts the magnificent, free form, lagoon-like infinity swimming pool. A separate Jacuzzi sits adjacent to the pool and features a couple of rock-like forms including a waterfall. Finally, a waterslide descends to a smaller lower level plunge pool which can also accessed by steps from the pool terrace above. At this lower level is a charming children’s playhouse, built in the style of a Barbadian chattel house, which contains board games, table football, table tennis, darts and a basketball net.
Back on the main terrace, guests can opt to dine out in the open or in the shade of the poolside gazebo, which has a wet bar and barbecue pit. With the Caribbean Sea in full view to the West, it is not hard to imagine why the villa is called Sunwatch. This has one of the best set ups for enjoying cocktails at sundown, whether from the veranda, the pool or from a sun lounger.
There are six individually furnished bedrooms at Sunwatch, each with air-conditioning, ceiling fans (these are also in the main living room) and covered patios. The main house has four of the bedrooms, in the north wing and accessed off the living area. Two of these are Master bedrooms with traditional bleached wood tray ceilings, fanlight doors to their patios and king size four posters, dressing areas and large en suite natural marble bathrooms. The other two bedrooms have twin beds. One is located between the two Masters and has a north facing patio, whilst the other has a patio facing the pool and ocean. Both have en suite bathrooms with showers. The remaining two bedrooms are located in a separate cottage to the side of the main driveway, just a few steps from the main house. An entry porch opens into a kitchenette where there is a larder fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. The two bedrooms also lead off it. Both have twin beds (which can be zipped to make a king) and a private patio either side. They have a shared bathroom with shower off the kitchenette. |

Beach & Swimming The nearest beach with easy public access is literally just down the hill next to Colony Club, which is about 5 minutes by car. Guests can choose to travel up the coast to St Peter, and use the members area at the Suga-Suga Beach Club & Spa, which is about 10 minutes by car. At the club guests benefit from discounted watersports, such as waterskiing, hobie cat sailing, kayaking and boat trips, plus sun beds are available and use of a private beach deck. There is also a popular bar and restaurant.
The communal infinity edge swimming pool up at Sugar Hill’s clubhouse measures 2000 sq ft, however the villa has its own, free form, infinity edge swimming pool. Designed to resemble a lagoon, with rock features incorporated into the perimeter, one set with a waterfall and planting. The pool is of a generous size measuring 49ft in length with depths of 3.6ft to 6ft, with a smaller lower level pool for the water slide feature above, with a depth of 4ft. A separate Jacuzzi is located next to the pool, beside the gazebo. |

Sports & Recreation The resort’s clubhouse has a fully equipped, air-conditioned gym and there are four floodlit, all weather tennis courts at the David Lloyd Tennis Centre where tuition is available at an additional cost. Guests also benefit from discounted watersports at the Suga-Suga Beach Club & Spa at Mullins in St Peter. The nearest golf course is Royal Westmoreland just a few minutes drive up the hill, which has some tee times open to outsiders in the mid morning, otherwise there are the three courses at Sandy Lane about 10 minutes away.
The villa features a charming wooden children’s playhouse/games room which is a miniature version of a chattel house located below the pool deck. This has board games, table tennis, table football, darts and a basket ball net. |

Locality Sunwatch is located in the fifty acre Sugar Hill Resort Community, located on a ridge over looking the West Coast, with facilities including the David Lloyd Tennis Centre with 4 floodlit courts, a clubhouse featuring a communal pool, the popular Sassafras restaurant and an air-conditioned gym. The nearest shopping district in Holetown (about 6 minutes south by car). Here you will find the Cave Shepherd Plaza and the larger West Coast Mall. These contain a supermarket, bank, photo centre, duty free shops, video rental, and various shops and boutiques. Also close by is the Chattel House Village, a series of traditional looking Caribbean cabins selling souvenirs, the 24 hour Sandy Crest Medical Centre, and a market stall where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. The town also has a gas station (as petrol stations are known locally) which has an in store mini-mart and an outlet of KFC, both open until late evening.
Holetown, the place where the English first landed in 1625, later settling it in 1627, is also a local Barbadian community, with police station, post office, parish church, bank, pharmacy, clinic, fitness centre, school and so on.
There is a host of restaurants ranging from posh to pizzas within 15 minutes’ drive in either direction of Sugar Hill, from the celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 8 minutes north, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take about 15 minutes heading south - also look out for Scarlet, Daphne’s and Calabaza in this direction. There are any number of restaurants in Holetown itself, including The Mews, Café Indigo, Olive’s and The Tides as well as an excellent patisserie, Flindt’s and several pizza parlours, cafés, a beach bar and some fast food outlets. There is also good nightlife in Holetown with lively weekend gatherings in 1st and 2nd Street, where the restaurants and bars stand shoulder to shoulder, with some providing live music. Drinkers tend to spill out into the street to mingle, creating an easy-going ‘street party’ type of atmosphere. The current ‘hot spots’ are The Mews, The Elbow Room, Spago’s and Lexy’s. |

Getting Around Although most things are relatively close at hand and Holetown can easily be reached by public transport, a hired car is strongly recommended for all private villa holidays, unless you prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. A car will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Stoutes Car Rentals and ask for your vehicle(s) to be delivered to the property approximately 3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on Barbados or, if preferred, the following morning.
