Description Swallow Villa is an extremely attractive three-bedroom villa with an excellent position above L’Anse aux Epines bay in the south of Grenada. It is elegant and comfortable, has good facilities and most importantly has a lovely, liveable feel to it. The house was designed by the late Arne Hasselquist, the Swedish architect who built many of the villas on the Grenadine island of Mustique not far away and it uses several of the elegant classical features that are typical of his work there. And of course its position close to the heart of the action in L’Anse aux Epines make it an excellent rental villa, ideal for a group of friends on holiday as well as a great location for a wedding or other gathering.
Swallow Villa sits above the head of L’Anse aux Epines or Prickly Bay, so it overlooks the beach and the yachts at anchor. After driving the long straight road into L’Anse aux Epines, you actually pass beneath it when you start to climb the hill. The drive turns off to the left and you pull into the rear of the villa. The character of the house is instantly visible. It has clean classical lines with pillars and pyramid-shaped shingle roofs. There are flattened arches and fan-topped windows with louvres and stepped white key-stones at the corners of the building. It is painted primrose yellow with white trim.
While Swallow Villa appears quite grand from the outside, it has a very familiar and friendly feeling inside. The walls, the tile floor and the wicker furniture are white, and the rooms are splashed with colour, mainly bright yellows, blues and greens in the upholstery and curtains and in the crockery in the kitchen. There are also deeper greens in the tropical plants that stand in urns.
You enter the house beneath a portico supported on round columns and walk straight into the large main room. This has a high tray ceiling and French windows topped by fan-shaped skylights that let in plenty of light. The main axis of the room runs straight forward to the French doors that take you out onto the pool deck. On your right there are sofas and armchairs, a TV with VCR (the bedrooms have DVDs) and books and games, and on the left is a dining table large enough for six (eight at a pinch). Beyond the dining section the room opens onto the very large kitchen (at the rear of the house) and to one of the three bedrooms. The master bedroom is on the right hand side at the front of the house and opens onto the pool deck. At the rear of the living room there is an office/study and a separate loo.
You are drawn naturally to the front of the room, towards the set of large French doors that lead out to the pool deck. But before you emerge into the sunshine you enter a covered living area with wicker armchairs. This is ideal for sitting under shelter when the sun is at its height. You also get the view over the head of Prickly Bay from here. Palms and sea grape trees line the waterfront and yachts stand at anchor on the calm water.
A couple of steps down takes you onto the pool terrace, where loungers are interspersed with tropical greenery in flowerbeds and urns. Golden palms stand at the corners of the pool in a pretty cascade of green. To one side of the pool is a gazebo with a pointed roof of shingle tiles supported on slender pillars. It is open-sided and contains wicker armchairs –another place to sit out of the sun - and a bar and stools, which makes it a popular gathering place in the evenings. Next to it is a brick barbecue. On the other side of the pool is a separate building which contains the third bedroom. Downstairs there is a gym with extensive equipment. The pool itself has an infinity edge and gives onto gardens that slope down to the road (any noise is blocked by a wall).
There are three main bedrooms at Swallow Villa, which continue the use of traditional Caribbean themes in the tall ceilings and louvred windows. They all have en suite bathrooms and are well separated from one another, making them very private. There are some pieces of antique furniture and local prints on the walls and although they can be air-conditioned they also have ceiling fans. The master is set at the front of the house and gives out onto the pool deck near the gazebo. It is a large room painted mostly white - walls, ceiling and louvred windows and frames –offset with green hangings and bright green and blue furnishings. It has a king size bed and a separate dressing room. The bathroom has a step-up whirlpool set into one corner and a glass shower in the other, linked by a wall of mirrors. On the other side of the house, also set at the front, is the second bedroom, with a king bed that can be converted to twins. This is decorated with bright hangings in green and orange. The third bedroom, which is in the separate pavilion just beyond the pool, is similarly decorated in yellows and blues. It has a queen sized bed. There is also room to accommodate one more person at the villa, by converting the office at the back of the house (behind the master bedroom) into a bedroom. It has a day bed in it which can be made up to sleep one person if needed.
The housekeeper at Swallow Villa is called Merle and she will cook all three meals each day during the working week. She is happy to do laundry. |

Beach & Swimming The pool at Swallow Villa is excellent and is the centre of outdoor life there. It is large - 15 feet by 30 - and has an infinity edge that takes in the view of L’Anse aux Epines Bay. There are loungers on the deck above it and plenty of areas for sitting out in the shade.
The closest beach is the main L’Anse aux Epines beach, which is within sight of the villa and just a couple of minutes’ walk across the road. The Calabash Hotel has a beach bar and restaurant on the sand and they are happy for outsiders to use them. They also offer some sports through their operator Scuba-Tech. Grand Anse and the beaches on the south-western peninsular are within five or ten minutes drive. |

Sports & Recreation There is a 9 hole golf course about ten minutes drive away. Scuba diving is available through several dive shops on Grand Anse and deep sea fishing can also be arranged too. It is possible to arrange for a massage therapist to come to your villa. |

Locality Swallow Villa is set near the heart of the action in L’Anse aux Epines in the south of Grenada. It is mainly a residential area, but there are some small hotels and a couple of restaurants and bars close by. There is a small mini-mart not far away but for a larger supermarket you should go to Grand Anse. St George’s, the capital of Grenada, is about fifteen minutes drive away. It is the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean and well worth a visit. There are a few restaurants within a short drive, on the road that leads into the L’Anse aux Epines area. For a smart meal try the Gary Rhodes restaurant at the Calabash just a short walk away and for something less formal the Red Crab. |

Useful Hints There has recently been some building in front of Swallow Villa. When construction is complete the beach and palms will still be visible, but the view onto the bay itself will be partly obscured. |

Getting Around Hiring a car to explore the island is easily arranged and is a great addition to a stay in Grenada. You can travel to the remoter beaches and the island’s many excellent beach bars, and eat out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. You will also have to collect groceries, so we recommend a car with all villa-based holidays.
We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company, Y&R Car Rentals), or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the hotel. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, as well as during August and Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.
Buses do run to the area, particularly in the morning (7.30-8.30am) as staff arrive at work and again in the afternoon as they leave (3-4pm), but they are infrequent otherwise. Elsewhere in Grenada, on the main road routes, the bus service is generally frequent and rapid. |
