Description
Ixora is a delightful three-bedroom villa that creates a very liveable modern home from classic Caribbean design. The impression is clear from your first sight on arrival. Ixora’s steeply pitched roofs are clad in traditional shingles - some that curve and taper to a point, others straight and topped by a white wooden ridge. Classical pillars stand in grand Caribbean style, French windows are topped with fan-shaped skylights and the house is trimmed with white balustrades and louvers. Set in pretty gardens, quite tight by the house next door, Ixora has a lovely setting overlooking an inlet in the residential area of L’Anse aux Epines.

You enter the house through a small covered entranceway with the same shingles and white wood, in miniature imitation of the roof, and walk directly into the living room, where you feel the friendly, relaxed air at once. Ixora is comfortably furnished and quite simply but very nicely decorated, with white tiles throughout, light-coloured walls and tall ceilings of whitewashed wood. The living room has woven wicker armchairs with light upholstery, plants in hefty vases and bookshelves and a CD player. The room looks straight ahead across the bay, through French doors onto a covered deck, over the pool and then onto the gardens, which slope down out of sight to the shoreline. There is a small cloakroom off the corner of the living room and in the roof you will see a small cupola. This is a traditional Caribbean method of ventilation. The cupola acts as a vent to draw up hot air from in the room, where it is whipped away by the passing breeze.

From the living room you walk left into the large kitchen and dining area, whose two parts are divided from one another by a breakfast bar. The kitchen is well equipped, with two fridge freezers, a microwave and extras such as a bread-making machine. The dining area is set at the front of the house and has a curved wall of glass that looks down onto the bay. There is a wooden dining table with chairs for six and a dresser to one side. The glass alcove is also used as a small sitting area - there are a couple of chairs and a TV in the corner – and it has a door giving onto the pool deck. At the rear of the kitchen there is a separate utility and laundry room and beyond that, giving onto the road, is a garage.

The three bedrooms at Ixora are set off the other side of the living room. These continue the same traditional West Indian architectural themes, with tall, pyramid ceilings and ceiling fans (they also have air-conditioning). They are prettily done, with furniture made of pine and wrought-iron four-poster beds. The two double rooms, at the front and the rear, are quite soberly decorated but the middle bedroom, which is most suitable for children, has twin beds covered with brightly coloured checked material. The master bedroom is at the front of the house, where it gives out onto a whirlpool deck set in its own gazebo. It has a four-poster bed with a muslin canopy, a TV and an en suite shower room. The children’s and the rear bedroom share a connecting bathroom.

You are likely to spend quite a bit of time outside at Ixora. The French doors out of the living room open out onto a covered veranda and then onto the pool deck, which is laid with terracotta tiles and is bordered by tropical plants and a white wooden balustrade. To the side the deck opens onto the whirlpool. Beyond the pool there is another deck with a gazebo. This makes a nice alfresco dining area and an excellent place to sit out, particularly in the cool of the evening when the sun goes down over the land on the opposite side of the bay. From here there are steps down to the shoreline, where you will find a jetty, giving you a swimming platform and another sun deck over the water.

The housekeeper at Ixora is Theresa, who comes in on weekdays, plus Saturdays if requested. She will cook a complimentary meal on the evening of your arrival and can also cook at other times on request. You might be interested that the villa’s name comes from a pretty Caribbean bush, which flowers with delicate red star-shaped petals. You will find some Ixora growing in the garden, among the traveller’s trees and royal palms.

Beach and Swimming
The pool at Ixora, set right outside the living room, is large (27ft by 15ft) and freeform in shape. There is no beach at the villa, but it is possible to swim in the bay, which is well protected from the open sea by land and by a reef at the mouth of the inlet. A jetty reaches out from the villa into the bay, from which you can swim to the reef.

There is a small stretch of sand just a short walk from Ixora, very natural but barely used, but the closest recognised beach is L’Anse aux Epines, which is at the head of Prickly Bay. It is not far to drive to Grand Anse or one of the beaches along the Point Salines peninsular.

Sports & Recreation
There is a 9-hole golf course about fifteen minutes drive away. Scuba diving is also available through several dive shops on Grand Anse.

Locality
Villa Ixora is set in the mainly residential area of L’Anse aux Epines in the south of Grenada. There is only a small mini-mart in the immediate area, so you will have to go to Grand Anse to find larger supermarkets. St George’s, the capital of Grenada, is about fifteen minutes drive away. It is the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean and well worth a visit. There are a few restaurants within a short drive, on the road that leads into the L’Anse aux Epines area. Try the Gary Rhodes restaurant at the Calabash and the Red Crab.

Airport Meet & Greet
If you have booked direct through Spice Isle Villas, you will be picked up at the airport on arrival and brought to the villa. The transfer takes about ten minutes. You will then be briefed about Ixora and offered a complimentary welcome meal by the housekeeper, Theresa.

If you book this villa in a flight-inclusive package through a travel organiser, it is likely that their representative will be at the airport to meet you. This service and your return airport transfers should be included in the cost of the holiday. Please check at the time of booking.

Getting Around
Hiring a car to explore the island is easily arranged and is a great addition to a stay in Grenada. You can travel to some of the remoter beaches and the island’s many excellent beach bars, and then eat out in the restaurants when you do not want to cater for yourself. You will also have to collect groceries, so we recommend a car with all villa-based holidays.

We suggest that you make a reservation in advance through Spice Isle Villas (who use our recommended car hire company,
Y&R Car Rentals) or your travel organiser at the time of booking your holiday. The car can be collected at the airport or be delivered to the villa. A Grenadian driving licence (price EC$30 for each driver) will be issued by the hire company. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or collected from the hotel. Be aware that at the height of the season between December and April, as well as during August and Thanksgiving (November), cars on island can be booked up, so it is a good idea to reserve one in advance.

Buses do run to the area, particularly in the morning (7.30-8.30am) as staff arrive at work and again in the afternoon as they leave (3-4pm), but they are infrequent otherwise. Elsewhere in Grenada, on the main road routes, the bus service is generally frequent and rapid.
