Description Named after the Zandoli, the creole name for a small ground lizard found in St Lucia, this is a magnificent house, which presides over stunning views of Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island from a hillside setting. Zandoli has a strong essence of Indonesia combined with features from the Caribbean, including typical West Indian woodwork and original works of art by local artists and also from other Caribbean islands, including Trinidad. The house is very striking from the outside with terracotta colour walls and vaulted shingle roofs reminiscent of those found in Bali, but also with a hint of the colonial plantation house. The hillside has been well landscaped and is brimming with ginger lilies, banana trees, palms and frangipani.
Zandoli is made up of a main house and a one bedroom guest cottage located to its rear, called Ti Zan (Creole for Little Zandoli). The main house is three pavilions that are set at different levels and linked by way of internal bridges. A large, very solid handmade wooden door leads guests into the main living area with its marble tiled floors and exposed wood ceilings. The room divides into a formal dining area and a comfortable sitting area and has been stylishly furnished with unusual looking teak and natural woven fibre furniture. From here you step out through two huge double doors onto a deep and wide covered veranda. This has fabulous views down to Pigeon Island and Rodney Bay, and also has a dining and sitting area. A passage leads to the kitchen, which is fitted out in pickled pine with tiled worktops and is fully equipped. Like the rest of the property, it has fantastic views to Pigeon Island and beyond.
Downstairs there is another more casual living area that contains the cable TV and is furnished with chunky bamboo framed cushioned seating. The room opens by way of two large arched doorways to a delightful covered local stone terrace, which extends out to the swimming pool. The pool terrace has a wet bar and features a teardrop shaped swimming pool with dramatic views to the coast. The living area has a shower room which can be conveniently accessed from the outside.
There are four bedrooms at Zandoli, two master bedrooms located in pavilions either side of the main living areas and another bedroom at ground level. The master bedrooms have gorgeous chunky, bamboo frame four poster beds and open onto private wood decked verandas with steps down to the gardens and swimming pool area. Both masters have en suite bathrooms with a dressing area and separate tub, and feature beautiful hand crafted natural stone outdoor showers. The stone showers are open topped with just a wooden lattice frame, so that the sky is in view, with the special 12” shower heads providing a natural rain shower experience – even more so when the rain does actually fall. The third bedroom is located at ground level within the main section of the house, and features a teak queen bed, with doors opening out to the gardens. It has an en suite shower room. A fourth bedroom at garden level has a queen size bed, with sea views over to Pigeon Island from a large arched window. Across the passageway is a bathroom with shower. All bedrooms have ceiling fans.
Ti Zan is a one bedroom, self-contained guest cottage located along the drive from Zandoli and is currently on Long Term Rental. |

Beach & Swimming A path leads down from the villa to Causeway Beach, which has two stretches of white sand and leads to Pigeon Island National Park. It takes ten to fifteen minutes to walk down or five minutes by car. The northern area of the beach is popular with St Lucians on weekends and bank holidays, and has a picnic area. Reduit Beach (about 10 minutes by car), located on Rodney Bay, is the island’s most popular beach and it has a lovely mile-long stretch of powder soft sand. It is fairly active and offer a good variety of watersports, including waterskiing, parasailing, jetski, sunfish and hobie cat sailing. Zandoli has its own swimming pool, which is purely for the use of guests staying at Zandoli unless Ti Zan has been booked by the same party. It is pear shaped, surrounded by a natural stone sun terrace off the lower living room and measures approximately 27ft by 12ft at the widest point. |

Locality Zandoli is located is located in the exclusive Cap Estate, within a fifteen minute walk or five minute drive of the Pigeon Island National Park, a forty four acre National Trust reserve which was joined to the mainland by a man-made causeway in 1972. The island features ruins of many 18th century British and French military buildings including Fort Rodney, and has an Interpretation Centre, a restaurant featuring local cuisine, a historical themed pub and restaurant, and lookout point at the top of the fort. The island is also the main venue of the annual St Lucia Jazz Festival, held each May, which attracts a host of international stars. A ferry runs between the island and Rodney Bay on an hourly schedule.
Two of the best restaurants in St Lucia are nearby, including the Great House and Tao at LeSport. At Rodney Bay, which is St Lucia’s busiest tourist area, there are hotels, some good restaurants and bars, a shopping mall, banks, mini marts and a nearby supermarket (on the main road) called Super J and a very lively nightlife. It has a busy marina and attracts over 200 boats for the annual ARC (trans-Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), which usually sees its first arrivals in early December. The nearby village of Gros Islet hosts the now famous Friday Night Jump Up, an all night street party. The Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island area is a ten minute journey by car. Castries the capital and George F L Charles Airport (formerly known as Vigie) which receives inter-island flights only, are about 25 minutes drive away. |

Useful Hints Ask your travel organiser or the management company (if booking direct) for initial food and drink supplies to be laid in for your arrival (a starter food pack costs approximately US $40 per person), so that the cook/housekeeper can then prepare a simple welcome meal should this be required. Thereafter, your housekeeper will be happy to assist you with your shopping should you wish to delegate this chore, however do expect to provide transportation and appropriate gratuity for this service. Rental rates for villas in St Lucia do not include ‘tips’, about which you will find advice in the guest information book at the villa.
Personal laundry is not included in the rental rates and charges are approximately as follows: machine wash small load EC$10, hand wash small load EC$25 and ironing small load EC$25.
The access road up to the villa is rough and therefore a jeep/4 wheel drive is the recommended type of vehicle hire. |

Getting Around A hired car is strongly recommended for all St Lucia villa rentals, unless you would prefer staff to call taxis for you as required. Do note that although the location is certainly not St Lucia off the beaten path, due to the rough access road, a 4 wheel drive jeep is recommended for Zandoli and Ti Zan. A vehicle will be useful if you want to dine out at night or do lots of sightseeing and particularly when it comes to shopping for groceries. Book car hire via your travel organiser or direct with Drive-A-Matic (Tropical Villas will book this for you) or Cool Breeze Car & Jeep Rentals for your St Lucia car rental and ask for your vehicle to be delivered to the property approximately 3 hours after your scheduled time of arrival on St Lucia or the following morning. Vehicles can be returned at the airport or be collected from the property at a pre-arranged time on your departure day. |
