Barbados / Villas & Villa Living

By James Henderson

Barbados offers an excellent range of privately owned and fully staffed villas, from simple beach cottages to opulent mansions. Most of the villas on Barbados are on the West Coast or within a few minutes drive of the beaches in the parishes of St James and St Peter, but another feature of Barbadian villa life are the old plantation houses, which give a peaceful country alternative to the relative hustle and bustle of the coast. There are also many villa resorts and small villa developments, which are popular with families or people who wish to mix and make friends.

On Definitive Caribbean we feature a selection of the best Caribbean villas, and the villas on Barbados represent some of the best villas available for rental on the island and in the Caribbean. All the Barbados villas we feature have professional and recommended management services – vital to the ultimate success of your holiday.

Many of the West Coast beachfront Barbados villas are situated between the main road and the beach, and this strip of land is sometimes quite narrow so do expect to hear some road noise although it doesn’t seem to put anyone off renting these hugely popular properties. Of course during the day you are likely to be at the pool or on the beach and at night it is less noticeable when the windows are closed and the air-conditioning is on.

If you book direct, all rental rates are subject to 8.75% VAT. If you book through a tour operator or travel organiser, the quote should include this tax. Unlike hotels, no service charge is levied on villa rentals so you need to budget for tipping your staff, which will be at least a housekeeper/cook but more usually will be a cook, maid, gardener and night watchman. For details of staff, please see the individual property descriptions. The management company will guide you but by way of a couple of examples, a cook would expect to receive at least US$75 a week; a maid/laundress US$50.

Please see below for our Barbados villa recommendations and listings. For further information about renting villas in Barbados, you may want to consult our Barbados villa rental agents guide.
