In Depth
Virgin Gorda Villa Rentals is a villa rental company based in Leverick Bay in the north of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. It rents out around forty private villas in two different areas of the island, first around Mahoe Bay, a nice stretch of sand to the north of Spanish Town, and second at Leverick Bay, a livelier area, popular with yachtsmen, on the North Sound. The company also manages the villas it rents out and has a number of other businesses under its wing, including the hotel and a marina at Leverick Bay.
As the name suggests though, the company is primarily a villa rental agency. It markets the villas, takes bookings and looks after visitors when they arrive and during their holiday. And when they are not occupied, it tends to the maintenance and staffing of the villas. The two areas in which it oversees its villas are quite distinct. Mahoe Bay is a half-mile curve of very nice sand set in a relatively isolated bay. There are about twenty villas there (fifteen of which are for rent) with a central tennis court and an office from which the housekeeping and maintenance is managed. Some of the best villas in the BVI for rental are located here and they offer an ideal beachfront holiday. Leverick Bay has a rather different feel. It is generally more ‘active’ and there is sometimes a lively crowd around the marina. Here the houses stand on a steep hillside above the bay. The higher the setting the finer the view of the North Sound, a fantastic stretch of shallow water surrounded by islands. Over 20 of the total 50 villas in Leverick Bay are for rent by the company.
A key part of villa life in Leverick Bay is the small hotel set right on the waterfront, the Leverick Bay Resort and Marina. The facilities on the waterfront can be used by villa guests. Next to the reception (which the villa rental and management company shares with the hotel), you will find a small complex with a number of shops. These include a dive shop, an internet café, a small supermarket in which you can provision or villa and a spa that can offer treatments to your villa. There is a restaurant upstairs (The Restaurant at Leverick Bay) and a beach bar (Jumbie’s) on the small beach. You will also find a pool, which people using the beach bar can use. Finally there is the marina with several docks, where you will find all the usual facilities for the many yachts passing through the area (you can get water, fuel and ice etc). There are also watersports (small sailing boats, windsurfers and kayaks) and you can arrange day sails. The marina can be important to your experience of Leverick Bay, too. The sailors in the bay add to the atmosphere, particularly on a Friday night when there is a lively ‘jump up’.
Virgin Gorda Villa Rentals has around 40 villas in all across the two areas. These vary in size between two and six bedrooms and (particularly in Leverick Bay) they vary in character too. Most have been built relatively recently, but some use their settings particularly well (on the beachfront or cleverly built on a ridgeline for example), or they have a particular style in their design. In addition to renting the villas out, the company also manages them (and others that are not for rent), arranging and paying the staff, making any repairs, cleaning the pools and tending the gardens. Finally there is a construction arm to the company (which was responsible for building most the villas in the first place).
Virgin Gorda Villa Rentals is owned by Chris Yates, an Englishwoman who came to the island in 1967 (when there was virtually nothing in Virgin Gorda). In 1989 she formed the company. She bought land in Mahoe Bay and sold plots to clients for development – and then built the private villas for them. After that most of the owners came back and asked her to manage their houses, often putting them up for holiday rental. Virgin Gorda Villa Rentals is managed by Monica Willis. There are about 60 staff altogether over the three sections of the company.
