Cayman Islands / Hotels & Resorts

By Tim Ecott

Grand Cayman is the centre of Cayman’s tourism industry, and the larger hotels tend to be concentrated on or within a stone’s throw of the epicentre of activities - Seven Mile Beach. The islands’ close proximity to the USA (it’s less than five hundred miles to Miami) means that many of the larger hotels offer a distinctly ‘American’ standard and style of product, since the vast majority of their guests will be from that market. This means that standards of cleanliness and efficiency are generally high, and the difference between properties tends to be determined simply by the level of amenities provided e.g. whether or not there is an in-house spa, extra facilities like speciality restaurants or sports facilities. Again, because of the American hospitality culture many of the hotels will offer rooms with kitchen facilities allowing guests to self-cater to a greater or lesser degree. This might be as basic as a kettle, fridge and a two ring electrical hob but it gives guests the option and allows them to save on some meals.

Most holiday-makers on Grand Cayman will expect easy access to the beach and watersports facilities and the larger hotels have been built to satisfy that demand, though one or two are not set directly on the ocean front and may involve a short walk, and occasionally it will require crossing a road – so it’s worth looking carefully at the map of the hotel and resort before booking. Even the Ritz-Carlton is not entirely on the beachfront, though they have solved the problem by building their own enclosed bridge over the road between the hotel lobby and the beach.

Cayman Brac has only one full-service resort, and the hotels on Little Cayman are all smaller properties set up to cater primarily for divers. Only a small proportion of visitors make it to the ‘Sister Islands’ and they do so because they value the laid back and barefoot culture, not because they seek excitement or nightlife.
