Dominica / Eco Resort/Camping

By Stephen Thorpe

It is no great surprise that this tiny isle in the Windward chain is forging an international reputation for progressive thinking and decisive action in the field of sustainable development and geotourism with its “back to the earth” approach rooted in holistic awareness. Enlightened individuals have developed a clutch of  “eco” establishments with different style and amenities in mountain and coastal locations over many years.

The term “eco” attracts different interpretations of course, some of them misleading; salient points in the selections below are whether the property has a strong connection with nature or holistic living and is actively striving to pursue those objectives, irrespective of actual energy sources.

Camping is not allowed in the National Parks or forest reserves and is not actively encouraged elsewhere. However, Citrus Creek plantation on the Taberi river near La Plaine is part of the groundbreaking Pura Vida Nomad Programme which facilitates patrons of Caribbean Glamping and Canvas Resorts to switch between other camps in Antigua, St.Maarten, St.Lucia and Union Island.
