Jamaica / Hotels & Resorts
Jamaica has some of the most famous hotels in the Caribbean, stalwarts that have been offering top knotch service to returning travellers for forty or fifty years. These few may retain their fashionable position, but they are no longer the only places to stay in the island. Newer generations of hotels have grown up around them, starting in the Seventies and Eighties, when the large package tour companies began to reach into the island and then the wave of all-inclusives. There is still building going on.
The major hotels in the island are all located on the beach and most are within a shout of the major resort towns, along the north shore between Negril, Montego Bay and a little beyond Ocho Rios. Many are very large indeed, with more than 200 rooms, though it is only recently that they have overtaken the 400 room Titchfield Hotel, which was open in Port Antonio in the early twentieth century. Despite the huge number of hotels in the island, more are still being built, and even larger than before, some with literally thousands of rooms. They look more like factories than hotels and are hardly the sort of place that you would want to spend a week on holiday.
So, for all of Jamaica’s huge number of hotels, there are really just a handful that we can honestly recommend as having true Jamaican character and suitable levels of service. In the absence of somewhere that suits your requirements you may want to look under the Small Hotels and Inns section.
