Saba / Accommodation

By Nigel Tisdall

Being a small, relaxed island with no beaches and little development, Saba has no big hotels or glitzy resorts. The most attractive places to stay are its traditional wooden cottages, but there are also some well-appointed villas, including a few with pools, as well as several small hotels that cater mainly to divers and walkers. Unlike other Caribbean islands, where a hotel can be a destination in itself, here it is a more a case of finding what suits your needs and budget best given that the options are very limited. The largest hotel has just 15 rooms, and there are only 110 on the whole island, so early booking is advisable for the best. Fortunately there is no period of seasonal closure as in the peak winter months Saba is filled with sun-seeking North Americans, while in summer it is visited by Europeans and residents of other Caribbean islands.

Most accommodation is in Windwardside, which also offers the widest choice of shops and restaurants. Note that not all properties offer air conditioning as Saba's mountain breezes and lofty altitude make this is unnecessary, but it will be to your advantage if there are mosquito screens fitted. A pool is useful in summer as there is limited opportunity for a dip in the sea, and it makes a refreshing end to a long hike.
