Saba / Cottages & Apartments

By Nigel Tisdall

Renting a pretty white wooden Saban cottage is probably the most rewarding way to enjoy your time on this charming island. Some of these are heirloom family properties that have been upgraded for holiday use but which still have typical features such as a red, wood-shingle roof, green-painted windows and shutters, gingerbread fretwork and a stone fireplace with chimney. Outside there will be a small stonewalled garden, a cistern to collect rainwater, and possibly a small cemetery where the previous occupants now rest in peace. Settle in for a week or two here and you'll get a good idea of how the Sabans lived from day to day before their far-flung and inaccessible homeland became hooked up to the modern world.

Other cottages are more recent constructions with all the cooking, bathing and living facilites expected in a self-catering property - but don't assume they will automatically come with satellite TV, wifi or air conditioning as standard. Most cottages are in or near Windwardside so you can dip in and out of town with ease. One advantage of renting is that you can cook for yourself - Saba's restaurant scene is somewhat limited. There is also not that much to do at night, so it is useful to be able to relax in your own little home rather than in a hotel room. Some cottages are rented out in conjunction with hotels, others through agents, and you can also find them advertised on local noticeboards. There are no apartments available for rent on Saba.
