Saba / Eco Resort/Camping

By Nigel Tisdall

Saba doesn't have much flat ground and has limited appeal to backpackers - so it's perhaps unsurprising that is has no campsites. There is one property on the island, though, that is firmly committed to a “green” agenda and which illustrates what can be achieved by enterprising hoteliers prepared to exploit the island's natural resources, such as using some of that wonderful Caribbean sunshine for power and the fertile volcanic soil for growing fruit and vegetables for the restaurant. The concept of “eco-luxury”, however, where guests can enjoy high class comforts in an environment committed to sustainability, has yet to make it to Saba – more often than not, “green” also means “basic”.
