Saba / Villas & Villa Living

By Nigel Tisdall

On Saba there is no straightforward distinction between what is deemed a cottage or a villa – the latter is generally larger and more generously furnished. Some take their design cues from the traditional Saban home with its attractive uniform of red roof, green windows and whitewashed walls. Others are modern, low-rise properties with elegant furniture, high quality kitchens and a somewhat bland, please-all style that makes them easy to slot into. The owners generally reside in North America or Europe and the standard of comfort and cleanliness is high – in the best you can look forward to a good view, an outdoor terrace, a flower-filled garden and a small swimming pool.

Renting a villa is an excellent way to spend time on the island, particularly as you can cook your own meals and live to your own pace. Some visitors come with family and friends for a relaxing break, others are couples keen to dive, hike or just catch up with themselves. Staff including a cook or nanny can be arranged, along with activities such as hiking, diving and touring the island. If you don't stay in Windwardside it will be essential to hire a car, although it is possible to get provisions delivered.
