Antigua and Barbuda / Beach Life

By Jane Anderson

Antigua is blessed with hundreds of idyllic beaches and much of island life is focused around its sandy shores. All beaches are open to the public so in theory there are no private beaches, though many resorts cultivate their own beach space and some are only accessible from resorts.

Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay along Antigua’s developed north-western coast are hubs of beach life with lively resorts, beach bars and water activities including boat trips, diving and snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, swimming with rays and yacht charters. For surfers, Galley Bay is renowned for its surf by day but as the sun goes down the stunning three-quarter mile crescent of sand is popular for joggers.

The beaches of the south-west and South Coast are generally less developed and perfect for getting away from it all. The south-east corner of the island is home to Half Moon Bay, a great place for a family outing.

Everything in Barbuda pretty much revolves around beach life as its smooth coastline is edged with long pink and white sand beaches. The rougher Atlantic east coast is good for beachcombing, though beware of currents. Many of the beaches, especially ones located away from the hotels, are often deserted, though weekends and holidays bring Barbudans out in force.
