Barbados / Kitesurfing/Windsurfing

By Deana Bellamy

The best conditions and winds for windsurfing and kitesurfing are on the south coast, with the season starting in November and running to late June, early July and at its best between December and March.

Instruction courses are available for advanced windsurfers at Silver Sands, which is the home of windsurfing, and the most southerly point on the island.

The face of windsurfing in Barbados is Brian “Irie Man” Talma, who represented Barbados in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and again in 1992 in Barcelona. He also toured the world circuit as a professional and is an official ambassador for Barbados. The Waterman Festival which focuses on windsurfing, kitesurfing, boogie-boarding and surfing is the brainchild of Brian Talma, and also incorporates general “Bajan beach culture” into the festivities.

In recent years kitesurfing has emerged as a popular sport on the island. As with windsurfing, the best conditions are around the southern point of the island and so it takes place mostly at Silver Sands.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing lessons and rentals on Barbados are available through:

deAction Beach Shop, Silver Sands - Surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and stand up paddling (SUPing).

Zed’s Surfing Adventures, Surfer’s Point - Surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and wave kayaking.
