Cayman Islands / Beach Life

By Tim Ecott

The best beaches are on Grand Cayman, which are home to the majority of organised activities and beachfront hotels. Seven Mile Beach is at the heart of all this activity, and although not quite as long as the name suggests, it is a superb stretch of golden sand with a wide assortment of restaurants and bars as well as many areas where it’s possible to just spread out a towel and enjoy the sun, sand and sea. Windsurfing, jetskis, snorkelling, waterskiing and other watersports can be done off the main beach. The majority of the facilities along the beach are attached to the numerous resorts, condominiums and hotels and although the beach is entirely public some areas are dominated by sun-loungers and parasols reserved for guests at the neighbouring properties.

Head for the northern western tip of Grand Cayman if you want to experience stretches of sand fringed with casuarina trees and not much else. Towards the east, at Rum Point the beaches are quieter too although there are resorts and villas a-plenty. Rum Point is also a centre for organised watersports and day sails.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have fewer sandy beaches, and very many fewer organised beach activities, both islands priding themselves on offering a very laid-back style of escapism. Little Cayman’s ‘Point of Sand’ beach is beautiful for picnics, and the resorts are located along the sheltered shoreline below South Hole Sound.
