Montserrat / Beach Life

Montserrat lacks the bright white sand of many of the other Caribbean islands. Instead, due to the volcanic geology, most of the beaches are dark in colour. Also, particularly because of its recent eruptions, the island has never suffered a large beach bound tourist invasion. The beaches therefore tend to be tranquil and undisturbed. All the beaches worth visiting are on the west coast.

Below is a selection of the best beaches in Montserrat.

Rendezvous Beach - On the northwest coast of the island, Rendezvous is the only white sand beach on Montserrat. It is accessible only by boat or a hike, but worth the effort. Take food and drinks as there are no facilities.

Little Bay - Now an active port in the north of the island, but the bay is still popular with swimmers. Beach bars and a restaurant nearby for a drink and a snack.

Bunkum Bay - Found at the bottom of St Peters’ lower road, Bunkum Bay has a beach bar and is a nice place to spend the day. Also try Woodlands Beach, which has a covered picnic area on the cliff looking out to sea. Be careful of rough waves.

Old Road Bay - A favourite bathing beach with the locals. Jumping Jack’s Beach Bar and Restaurant nearby for refreshments.

Lime Kiln Beach and Isles Bay Beach - Two very secluded spots ideal for relaxing. Further south the effect of the volcano eruptions are clear.
