Caribbean Yacht Charter - Essential Tips

By: Frances and Michael Howorth January 2012

Calmer seas are the order of the day during off-season months that begin in May and run through until October. Provided voyages are planned with hurricane bolt holes in mind and weather ears kept firmly tuned into forecasting experts, summertime can offer the most rewarding of times afloat. Our personal favourite months for sailing here are May and October.

With winter breezes blowing steadily out of the east, between November and April, sailing from North to South becomes exciting. This period signals fast-paced inter-island reaches, interspaced with calm water sailing in the lee of the more mountainous islands. Winds are generally strongest in December and January.

Keep an eye on cruise ship itineraries when planning voyages. 3000 passengers trooping ashore can put a strain on any island’s infrastructure and being on a yacht means you can chose to arrive before they come or after they have left.

When guests asked us in the past what to bring when joining us on our boat we used to say clothes are optional but a smile is mandatory. Ashore, it can be a little more formal especially in town, and the well dressed tend to wear smart shorts and a T-shirt!

More practically we suggest you include: deck and water/beach shoes, swim wear, your own mask and snorkel, sunglasses, favourite sunscreens, a light long-sleeved shirt, sunhat, summer weight rain gear and a sweater if you plan any overnight sailing.

What ever you pack, remember to use a soft, roll-up bag. Limited storage spaces on boats make rigid suitcases very poor cabin companions.
