Anguilla / Food & Drink

By Sara Macefield

Anguilla is an unlikely contender in the gourmet dining stakes especially against stiff competition from the likes of Barbados or St Barths which tend to attract more of the international spotlight. But this upmarket, yet low-key, haven is a mouth-watering treasure chest of tropical flavours and haute cuisine, boasting one of the most impressive line-ups of restaurants in the Caribbean.

At first glance, this tiny speck of a place, measuring just 35 square miles, gives no clues to its reputation as a gourmand’s paradise, but it is home to a huge array of restaurants – ranging from romantic fine-dining retreats to atmospheric beach cafes and roadside barbecues. In fact, there are so many places to eat that visitors staying for two weeks can easily dine in a different place every night.

The island prides itself on its brand of casual chic, which permeates through dining establishments eschewing formality in favour of Anguillian elegance that attracts A-list celebrities in stunning waterfront surroundings – generally overlooking the island’s beautiful beaches. It is also one of the few place where many hotel restaurants are renowned venues in their own right. Anguilla’s proximity to the French/Dutch island of St Martin/St Maarten has brought across French gastronomic influences along with fresh ingredients flown in daily from France, giving local chefs the chance to give classic flavours a tropical twist. Away from the restaurants, and Anguilla’s night-time scene focuses on fun and barefoot informality with a good range of beach bars that offer an ideal setting for that perfect sundowner.
