Barbados / Food & Drink
As a long-established haunt of Britain’s glitterati and moneyed classes, it’s not surprising that Barbados has developed a restaurant scene to appeal to them with some of the most renowned and sophisticated establishments in the Caribbean. The island’s so-called “Platinum Coast” which runs along the west shore, where its most famous and expensive hotels sit amid opulent surroundings, is home to a veritable feast of fashionable, upmarket restaurants and suitably hip bars whose fame has spread through the region. But it’s important to remember that like any perfect host, Barbados can cater admirably for all tastes and all pockets. In fact, it can lay claim to having one of the widest choices and longest line-ups of bars and restaurants of any island in the English-speaking Caribbean.
In the south of the island, the area around St Lawrence Gap has become famous for its lively night-time scene, aided by an impressive string of nightclubs, bars and restaurants with venues that are lively, casual and fun - and more moderately priced.
While most bars and restaurants are concentrated in these two parts of the island, the capital Bridgetown has a few popular spots, some of which are noted for their live music, though this is a feature of a number of bars on the island.
The undeveloped East Coast has a couple of atmospheric restaurants in beautiful untouched surroundings, noted for their local flair and traditional ambience. Unusually for the Caribbean, Barbados also has a few wine bars, but for a more local flavour the rum shops offer a fun diversion. After all, rum has been produced here for centuries and Barbados Mount Gay Rum is said to be the oldest in the world.
