Cayman Islands / Food & Drink
Grand Cayman can compete with anywhere in the Caribbean for its choice, variety and standard of dining experiences. In recent years several top chefs have moved to the island and visitors are spoiled for choice whether they want fine dining, Caribbean flavour or simple staples served with fresh ingredients. There is everything from cosy family-run restaurants, Miami Beach style and sports bars, fast food outlets as well as sophisticated metropolitan-style club rooms.
It would be a mistake to assume that dining on Grand Cayman is dominated by the few ‘fast food’ outlets with their highly visible signs en-route from the airport. The high number of banking, insurance and offshore businesses in the islands ensures that there is enough of a sophisticated clientele to support numerous good restaurants. And, tucked away slightly, but easily accessible with a little effort are a number of local eateries and traditional ‘jerk’ restaurants selling affordable, often ‘take-away’ dishes that allow the visitor to say they have experience a Caribbean flavour to the islands. Many hotels offer buffet evenings or speciality nights, and there are several restaurants with atmospheric waterfront settings. The new development at Camana Bay features several restaurants that have sent out a strong challenge to some of the long-established venues around George Town, and Morgan’s Harbour at the Western End of Grand Cayman has become a hotspot for dining in the last year or two.
Eating out is rarely inexpensive in Cayman, but lunch can be as little as $8 for a snack at a roadside jerk kitchen. Generally, expect to pay from around $40 head up to $150 excluding wine in the restaurants.
Cayman Brac has fewer dining choices and visitors will find that they can choose between simple local eateries and one or two hotel restaurants. Little Cayman has a slightly wider choice of venues but remember that people go to the Sister Islands to escape the ‘hustle and bustle’ of Grand Cayman.
