Grenada & Carriacou / Food & Drink

By Sara Macefield

Eating out in Grenada can be one big culinary adventure for those brave enough to eschew the more middle of the road international cuisine and eat like the locals. The island is known for its traditional West Indian fare and there are plenty of rustic restaurants where visitors can sample local specialities, often in spectacular surroundings. While there are a handful of high-class restaurants, including one of the few celebrity chef restaurants in the Caribbean, most tend to be mid-range set in pretty beach or waterfront settings. But it’s fun to jump off the tourist trail and seek out some of the haunts popular with locals where you can be guaranteed good home-made cuisine at reasonable prices.

The northern part of the island is where visitors are likely to find more a local scene, and this goes for the nightlife too. The bars and clubs have a strong West Indian flavour, but don’t overlook Grenada’s hotels as these also boast good entertainment.

Expect a slower, more local pace of life in Grenada’s smaller, quieter sister islands. Carriacou has a reasonable selection of bars and restaurants which can become quite busy in season and around festival time, while Petite Martinique has a small clutch of simple, local establishments.

However, Grenada’s history of sugar and rum production have left a legacy of distilleries still operating on the island producing a range of different rum varieties and even some overproof and bootleg rums.
