Saba / Food & Drink

By Nigel Tisdall

Saba is not a gastronomic paradise (for that, stop off at the French restaurants in St Martin). It's hard to find freshly-caught fish and most of the food served in restaurants is imported and expensive. Portions tend to be large with lacklustre cooking and little sense of presentation. The menus are not big on desserts and the wine list in some bars may only be as extensive as red or white. If you dislike smoking, note that the ban now commonplace in many countries has yet to make it to the hostelries of Saba.

Rum is not produced on Saba but look out for Saba Spice, a drink made with imported rum that is then spiced up with cinnamon, cloves, aniseed and fruits according to individual preferences. Every producer has their own secret recipe, so the opportunities for conducting some thorough research are considerable. Saba Spice is sold in gift shops and hotels – try a glass in a bar before investing in a bottle.
