St Eustatius / Food & Drink

By Nigel Tisdall

Dining out is not a key reason for visiting St Eustatius. Within a few days you will have tried all the available options and while you won't go hungry you also won't be amazed. Some restaurants do offer freshly-caught fish but generally the food served is often made with imported ingredients and served in an unglamorous pile-it-high style.

Rum is no longer produced on St Eustatius, although the ruins of a 19th-century distillery remain in the Boven National Park and a restored wooden rum shop (now a store called Paper Corner) sits on the corner of Emmaweg and Paramiraweg in Oranjestad Upper Town. The Mazinga on the Bay gift shop in Oranjestad Lower Town stocks a selection of Caribbean rums, including - ironically - one from St Lucia named after Admiral Rodney, the English naval commander who trounced the island in 1781.
