St Eustatius is like a sleeping giant. For much of the time it seems that nothing much could ever happen here and all there is to do is drink a beer by the waves at sunset. Then suddenly everyone wakes up and decides it's time to party. Friday and Saturday nights are the liveliest with the same people often progressing from one venue to the next as the night unfolds.

Here is a selection of the most popular bars on St Eustatius:

318, Oranjestad Upper Town - Named after the island's dialling code, this is an air-conditioned dancing box with red walls and disco lights. It gets busy later than other venues, and is a main place to go on Saturdays.

Ocean Lounge, Oranjestad Lower Town - Part of the Old Gin House Hotel, this well-appointed bar sits beside a private beach area – go for cocktails, snacks and chilled sounds by the waves.

Park View, Oranjestad Upper Town - Next to Wilhelmina Park, a lively spot with blue fairy lights, a pool table, free snacks and a playlist that is unashamedly get up and dance. A good starting point for a night out.

Smoke Alley, Oranjestad Lower Town - An isolated seaside bar and restaurant at the northern end of Oranje Bay that has a DJ every Friday night. Popular with medical students. Closed Sunday.
