The restaurant options on St Eustatius are limited and they are all to be found in and around Oranjestad. There is little concept of “fine dining” and wine lists are not extensive. Credits cards are often not accepted. Bills may include a service charge of up to 15%; tips are at your discretion.

The cost of an average main course (excluding steak and lobster) is as follows: Inexpensive - $15 and below, Moderate $15-25, Expensive - US$25 and above.

Here is a selection of recommended St Eustatius restaurants:

Blue Bead Restaurant, Oranjestad Lower Town, expensive - Set back from the waterfront in Oranje Bay, this expat favourite has a colourful airy verandah and a menu ranging from burgers and salads to fresh local fish when available. Closed Monday, Tuesday and mid-June to mid-September.

Franky's, Oranjestad Upper Town, inexpensive - A simple white wooden shack restaurant serving Caribbean favourites such as snapper, conch, oxtail stew and goat meat. Closed Wednesday.

Ocean View Terrace, Oranjestad Upper Town, moderate - What was once the barracks at Fort Oranje is now home to a terrace restaurant that makes a pleasant spot to dine al fresco. The menu gives little away so best talk to the chef. Closed Sunday.

Smoke Alley, Oranjestad Lower Town - A relaxed wooden bar and restaurant with a pirate theme overlooking the sea at the north end of Oranje Bay. The sociable American owner cooks the grilled meats himself, portions are generous. Closed Saturday lunchtime and Sunday.
