Barefoot, rustic and zany sums up some of the nightspots that you’ll find on St Kitts. This island cannot lay claim to having the liveliest of party scenes, but it has a good collection of bars, mainly lined up along Frigate Bay in an area known as “The Strip”. Here you’ll find drinking spots with wonderfully catchy names, including Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack or the Monkey Bar, but they offer a perfect spot to enjoy a few sundowners and soak up the local atmosphere, sometimes helped along with live music, karaoke, and even a spot of fire-eating. There are a few other drinking haunts scattered around, but the most comprehensive way to sample them is on the novel Bob & Elvis Party Bus, which takes eager party animals on a bar crawl.

Those wanting to indulge in some local rums can enjoy St Kitts’ own branded varieties, distilled on the island, or even try a tasting at the rum shop in the port. There is a good choice of restaurants and no shortage of atmospheric settings with a few housed in old plantation inns amid the ruins of former sugar mills. Most restaurants tend to serve international and Caribbean cuisine, though more adventurous fare can be found in the hotels.
