St Vincent and the Grenadines / Food & Drink
Go for a sundowner in St Vincent and Grenadines and you could just as easily end up rubbing shoulders with rock legend Mick Jagger as you could with one of the locals. And that is the beauty of this part of the Caribbean. It is where the the rich and famous come to play and relax in the laidback, low key and beautiful surroundings of this group of islands. And you can see why. Most of the bars are set in stunning locations, offering fabulous waterfront views and a chilled ambience, while regular appearances by live bands and DJs help to spice up the atmosphere. Those looking for more action can try the local clubs and hotels or, for a local flavour, stop off at one of the rum shacks where lively gatherings turn into parties that run into the small hours.
Diners can choose from a good range of restaurants scattered across the islands serving Creole and international cuisine. The biggest selection is to be found on St Vincent and Bequia, ranging from classy upmarket establishments in hotels to more authentic local eateries serving up local Creole food and local entertainment. Venues on the smaller islands have more of a seafaring flair, thanks to their popularity with yachties passing through, while those in Mustique have a certain cache, helped by the island’s celebrity status.
St Vincent also has its own rum distillery, which produces a number of varieties, but the island is noted for two other strong rums – Bois Bande, a spicy concoction known locally as “liquid Viagra” and Jack Iron - such a strong rum that it is illegal in most islands.
