In Depth
Island Car Rentals are undoubtedly the pre-eminent car rental company on the island and we recommend them unreservedly. Customer service, comfort, cleanliness and safety are their hallmarks, with punctuality and well maintained vehicles crucial, and they also retain a wide range of four-wheel drives, which is critical in a country like Dominica.
Moreover, travelling times can often be longer than anticipated on narrow roads, even though the distance may not be that great. Hence their four pick-up and drop-off points at Melville Hall Airport, Canefield, Portsmouth and the ferry terminal at Bayfront, Roseau are an absolute boon.
Island Cars have probably the most diverse fleet in the country with 4x4s like the Suzuki APV, Jimny and Escudo, their top of the range Grand Vitara 07, Nissan Navaras and Pathfinders are all robust and manoeuvrable.; pick-ups, compacts and saloon cars are also available.
They will issue a Dominica Driving Licence costing EC$30 for a month, so be sure to carry your local domestic or international licence. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) will cost extra but is probably advisable.
Terms & Conditions
Drivers must be over 25 and must have held a valid driving licence for at least two years – otherwise a surcharge of US$2.50 per day applies.
A temporary driving permit is necessary to drive in Dominica, and is issued by the company’s representative when you take delivery. Cost US$12/EC$30 and is valid for one month.
A surcharge of US$2.50 applies per additional driver, per day – same rules apply regarding temporary permit, minimum age, etc.
There are three options regarding the cost of the delivery petrol in the vehicles, which will normally have about a ¼ tank of fuel. You can prepay, pay at the end of the rental (both at a higher premium) or make sure you return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel by filling prior to drop-off.
A deposit is required at the time of delivery and payment is made for the hire and CDW at the end of the rental. Cancellations must be made 5 days prior to the reservation date otherwise a no show rental charge will apply. Please see Island Car Rental’s website for full Terms and Conditions under Policies.
Credit cards are accepted - American Express, VISA or MasterCard.
Reservations
We recommend that you book in advance if you are intending to hire a car for longer than three days, and certainly if you are travelling during the main winter season from 15 December until after Easter. Other very busy periods for Dominica car rental companies can be over Thanksgiving and between the middle of July through to the middle of August.
To avoid disappointment, the best policy is to book your car at the same time as you book your accommodation or flight inclusive holiday.
