Dominica / Local Transport

This is always the way to go at some point on a Dominican sojourn but don’t expect to travel long distances in one minivan; there may be stops, a bit of walking perhaps to the next pick-up stage, but you’ll get there in the end, usually none too worse for the experience and probably more informed. Roseau is the main departure point – from Valley Road near the Police Station for transport to Roseau Valley and Trafalgar; by the Old Market for the south of the island; West Bridge for northbound and west; Queen Mary Street for eastward (subject to change) but there are bus halts island wide and basically one can be hailed anywhere on a main rural route. Confirm the destination with the driver before boarding and look out for the H, HA or HB licence plates.

When buses stop running in the evening, private taxis licensed by the Government can be arranged through hotels, though there are no fixed rates and asking around for the correct fare is sensible before booking. Beware when large cruise ships are in town, taxis and road space can be at a premium on routes to popular attractions.
