Grenada & Carriacou / Car Rental

It is fun to explore Grenada. The island has some extremely pretty countryside, including the mountains and rainforest in the centre, the sleepy remote towns in the north of the island, and of course its beach bars. By hiring a car you are able to explore at your own pace and stop where you feel like it to enjoy chatting to the Grenadians. There are also the restaurants to visit in the evenings. Of course if you are staying in a villa then a car is pretty much essential.

To drive in Grenada you will need to buy a Grenadian driving licence. These can be supplied by the car hire company (or the main police station on the Carenage) on presentation of your licence from home. It lasts three months and costs EC$30 (about US$12). Don’t forget your driving licence!

We recommend using Y&R Car Rentals, a family owned car hire company with offices at the airport and the Coyaba Beach Resort, Y&R is one of the largest car rental companies on the island. They deliver free of charge to villas and marinas as well as all the hotels.

Carriacou

Carriacou is a small island, but it is large enough that getting around it is an issue, so unless you wish to use one of the few taxis, then it will be very useful to have a car, particularly if you are staying in a villa. In fact, only jeeps are available for hire. We recommend Martin & Wayne's Jeep Rentals, a small car rental company which has around 12 jeeps for rent from its base in Hillsborough, the island’s only town.

Driving and Parking

Driving is on the left in Grenada, generally speaking, though there are recognised chicanes around pot holes and errant cattle.

Parking in St George’s is a nightmare. Be prepared to walk a good distance. If you can, avoid the days when the larger cruise ships are in port because there is total gridlock with taxi drivers and buses hoping for business.
