Grenada & Carriacou / Ferries

Taking one of the many ferries that ply the waters between Grenada and its sister islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique offers a more relaxing and scenic alternative to flying. While most visitors to the islands arrive by air, the ferry journey gives travellers fabulous views of Grenada’s scenic west coast. For those coming from outside the region, staying for one or two nights on Grenada en route not only breaks up the journey, but turns the trip into more of a two-centre stay.

The Fast Ferry:

The Osprey - This operates between the Carenage in Grenada’s capital St George’s and Carriacou every day, departing at 9am Monday to Saturday and 8am on Sundays. There is also a later service departing at 5.30pm, which runs every day apart from Saturdays. During peak season, there are two Osprey ferries: the “Osprey Shuttle” fast-ferry, taking 90 minutes and the conventional “Osprey Express” taking two hours. In the off season, only the “Osprey Express” operates. The crossing can be quite rough, especially on the northbound journey from Grenada to Carriacou, so if you are not a good sea traveller it is a good idea to take sea-sickness medication. From Carriacou, an onward service is offered to Petite Martinique. One-way fares for Grenada-Carriacou are $31 and for the Carriacou-Petite Martinique sector is $12.

Other ferries also make the run from St George’s to Carriacou (and beyond to Petite Martinique), though they tend to be slower. There are ferry services between Carriacou and Union Island in the Grenadines, but a faster link is provided by a 45-minute speedboat ride from Union Island to Carriacou.
