St Martin/St Maarten / Getting Around
St Martin/St Maarten is easy to explore although getting around can be surprisingly slow given that the island is only 37 square miles (96 sq km). If you are just passing though, taxis and public buses will probably be sufficient for your needs – transfers can also be arranged when you book an activity such as a sailing trip or dive. Hiring a car is a good idea if you plan to be here for some time and want to fully enjoy the island. Even though it is split into French and Dutch sides there is no formal border to cross – in fact at times it can be hard to tell which country you are in. One clue is that the roads in St Martin are in a marginally better condition than on St Maarten, and there are no high-rise buildings or casinos.
