Journalist’s Review
In Depth
On Tobago we recommend Thrifty Car Rentals, which has had a solid reputation for reliability stretching back for over two decades. The company is owned and run by Eon Rodriguez, who has held the Thrifty franchise in Tobago since 1992. In fact he was in the car rental business for 12 years before that as well. He has probably the most flexible and reliable car rental business on the island.
Thrifty’s office and the garage are based just across from the airport. This is one of the advantages for customers. It is easy to pick up a car on arrival. If you let Thrifty know the time of your flight they can watch for it and come to collect you as you clear Customs.
The company is small, with just five employees in all, three of whom have been with the company for over eight years. Their fleet numbers around 80 and there is a good variety of vehicles. In addition to the usual cars and slightly greater number of jeeps you can hire an SUV and even a 12 seater van.
Delivery
Thrifty will deliver free of charge to any hotel or villa that is within a ten mile radius of the garage at the west end of Tobago. Outside this area there is a US$30 charge each way.
Reservations
We recommend that you book in advance if you are intending to hire a car for longer than three days, particularly if you are travelling during the busy seasons around Christmas, Easter and at Carnival time. The best idea is to book your car at the same time as you book your accommodation or holiday.
