Trinidad / Island Hopping

Sister island Tobago is the nearest regular port of call and an air-bridge service is operated by Caribbean Airlines, the national carrier, which has more than a dozen return flights daily (currently costing TT$300/US$50 per adult return) – booking service available through Yes! Tourism.

Flying is always the quicker option but the newly-upgraded ferries, T&T Express and T&T Spirit, are actually speedy catamarans and a leisurely, pleasurable alternative if you’ve time to burn, taking about 2½ half hours. If you travel on the conventional cargo vessel Warrior Spirit, prepare for a much longer, possibly rougher crossing. Tickets (same day only) can be purchased from the Port of Spain Terminal (see below), otherwise tickets are available islandwide through travel agents and internet cafes.

Regional airlines that serve Trinidad include:

Caribbean Airlines has flights to Caracas, Guyana, Surinam, Barbados, Antigua and Grenada, while LIAT has connections from Port of Spain to Grenada and Barbados and all points north through the Windwards and Leewards. Low-cost airline REDjet based in Barbados, has services into Port of Spain and also to Guyana and Jamaica (Kingston). STOP PRESS: As of 16 March 2012 REDjet has suspended all flights until further notice.

Alternatively, local yachtsmen generally head north for the Grenadines from marinas on the Chaguaramas peninsular. Ask around at the right time or stick up an advert in the right spot and you may be able to work a passage.

Local charter airlines include:

SVG Air - A small Caribbean airline based in St Vincent that offers shared and private charters. SVG Air has around a dozen 5-19-seater planes and also offers island hopping and air ambulance services.
