Dominica / Getting There

Dominica is one of the Caribbean’s more uncommercialised and undiscovered islands, helped by the lack of direct international flights. It is best reached via one of the main Caribbean air hubs and access has been improved thanks to the installation of night landing facilities at the island’s Melville Hall Airport. The facility is located on the north-east coast, a 24-mile and 90-minute drive from the capital Roseau along winding roads. Thanks to European Union funding, it has also benefited from a runway extension and improvements to the terminal building. A small makeshift drinks and food outlet has opened adjacent to the car rental desks, so best to stock up here because nothing is available once within the check-in and security area. There is also a short airstrip at Canefield in the south-west, just north of the capital Roseau. For those arriving from Guadeloupe or Martinique, there is also a ferry service.
